So.... I'm pretty sure my truck keys went with the trash Saturday morning. Can a locksmith make one for a 2nd gen? And if so how much? I did a search and could only find a thread on 1st gen.

go to toyota parts dept with reg.
they can cut key from your vin.
Chip keys have to be programmed. if all keys are missing then immobilizer reset needs to be done.

This. If you have the blinking red light under the radio with the truck off, then you have an immobilizer. Might as well just tow it to the dealer. A local locksmith isn't going to be able to handle it. Maybe if you still had a key to duplicate, but not from scratch.

I know my dealer charges an hour labor to "re-seed" the key codes in the ECU. Plus the cost of cutting the key, which hopefully they can do from your VIN. I still had a key, so I took mine to a local locksmith to have the keys cut, then went to the dealer.

Well 226 dollars in so far, but it gets better, the idiot parts guy cut the keys wrong and it was the last two keys they had!! So they said it will be ready tomorrow but I'm work a 48 starting tomorrow, off Sunday ( dealers closed) 24 hour shift Monday and 12 hour shift Tuesday. I ask the parts guy how hard is it to type in a vin get a code and make a key.... No response. Jeez, I hate dealerships!

    AAAAAHH MAN !!!!!!

WE never trace keys anymore. always get the code from the vin. Keys wear out and you end up cutting a worn key pattern.
    just being lazy............
    I am sorry

Hey Mike as a tech maybe you could answer this for me. I've been told both by Ace hardware and Walmart that they cannot duplicate the immobilizer on 2011 models (2010 no problem) did Toyota change something for this model year or am I dealing with novices. Thank for a reply.

some hardware stores can scan your old key, if you have an extra, and program a chip for new key. i had one made and it is half what toyota charges. i went to revell ace hardware.
