Loud CLUNK when approaching a stop

    All,
I've spent the last year visiting my dealership trying to resolve a clunk (felt like preload then releasing, in varying degrees of severity) in the back wend when coming to a stop (2017 TRD sport 4x4 long bed, auto). Finally got the dealer to hear the noise after driving around a tech. Newer and older models were test driven to confirm it was just mine. Was told the regional engineer would be in later this week.
Today - got a text from my sales person, apparently there is finally a fix - TSB or recall related, she wasn'the sure. They're ordering parts now for a 3/4 appointment, and promised me a loaner up front, which is unusual for them, so I'm assuming this may take a bit.

Will update with details as soon as I have them.

For those with issues like this, service manager told me 1/10 has issues of varying degrees, definitely ask your dealer!

Edit: this is to address noise and vibration issues in 2017 and 2018 model years

I was going to trade it in for a 4Runner if this wasn't resolved soon. Still may if this isn't resolved... this needs to be a permanent fix with extended warranty coverage for affected parts

I assume they've been under your truck checking bolts and it's not just the bed sliding around or something like that?

Not trying to be a smartass I promise.

But do you have anything in the storage compartments in the bed?

Only reason I ask is I had placed a large ratchet strap in the larger one and forgot about it, and it was sliding back and forth causing a loud clunk. Took me a week to remember that I had it in there after driving myself crazy trying to figure out the clunk. That was my problem lol :anonymous:

Doesn't happen all the time.... it actually happens more in town than extremely fast stops. Nothing appears loose.

Has happened with nothing in there, also less common when stopping extremely quick. It's the gradual stops that are the worst.

I thought there was another thread about this issue?
I get something similar sometimes when slowing to a stop, it's like a hard downshift. I keep meaning to stick the gopro to see if I can capture it.

Also when coasting to a stop then hitting the gas there's quite a lag, not sure if it's a drive by wire thing.

In my past loud clunks up front in autos have occurred because: strut bolt loose, tie rod shot, steering gear shot.

It is a symptom of the 3rd gen trucks. Can be reduced if you tranny fluid is indeed full. Lots of chatter on this topic in other forums.

There were a few of us (@TacoRunner2017, @MAS, @Cappy @itsnotatoy, myself and maybe others) discussing it in the What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today. It feels like a hard downshift to me and it seems to happen most often when not up to operating temp.

Is this a fix for the 2 to 1 clunk?? The one that feels like you were rear ended or something in the bed slid into the cab? If so this is awesome!! More details please! Ha

Yeah, very annoying. Especially when you're not expecting it on a slick road. Happens to me even when the truck is good and warm.

I'll have to pay more attention when it happens.
Part of my problem is I have a company truck and the taco could possibly sit all week without me getting in it.
I'm in SoCal so it's not like it's taking a long time to warm up.

if I get the gopro situated right I can probably catch the dash rattle as well as the clunk!

That's exactly the one! But, I don't think it's downshift related... others I have driven don't have the same issue, or at least not as severe.

Transmission fluid is full, they added a quart almost 9 months back. Latest programming updates did help with downshifting, but this issue remained

I had this condition as well. Took it back to my dealer who said there was a TSB on it. They reflashed the trans and it seems to be fixed.

They did that for me... it helped downshifting, but didn't resolve this. They never encounter one as bad as mine. This recall or TSB is to address noise and vibration in 2017 and 2018 model yesrs

4 things have helped reduce this dramatically for me.
    1. Transmission TSB
    2. Greasing the drive shafts
    3. Retorquing ubolts
    4. Topping off the transmission fluid

It's not completely gone, but much much better then it was.

Also, I wouldn't trust the dealership to anything other then the Transmission flash. Theres plenty of info to do the rest yourself with minimal tools. The dealer doesnt always do the things they say they do from my experience

I've got confirmation there are parts on order to resolve this issue from my sales person. Haven't seen the specifics yet.
The promise of a loaner up front, which is unusual for them, also tells me this is likely not a quick fix.
