Hello everyone, brand new to the group. I have a 2019 trd off road with 12k miles on it. I’m experiencing a very loud tick at idle when the truck is warmed up. Does anyone else have this issue? I just took it to a dealership and Toyota claims it’s normal.

Sounds like the normal injector cleaning cycle.

    It's the Atkinson cycle.

That's why Toyota says this is normal. Welcome to TW!

When I first got my '16, I was shooting the shit with a co-worker who is an old school mechanic. I was sitting there idling in the parking lot at quitting time, he was standing next to the driver's door. The DI cleaning cycle kicked in, and immediately this dude stopped talking, cocked his head to the side and had this "WTF" look on his face. I told him what it was and he looked at me in disbelief. I guess he hadn't heard of D4S either :)

Mine did it today for the first time sitting in the garage while I let it idle and messed with some of the settings on the huge nav screen and instrument cluster. 2020 TRD Pro with 45 miles on it now.

No idea what that loud tick was, so I checked here.

Funny to read threads form 2016 on this and the usual suspects "YOUR ENGINE IS RUINED, TAKE IT BACK, THE 3.5 IS TOTAL JUNK, SELL IT NOW!!!" and here we are in 2019 and everyone is "It's normal" and we're all used to it.

Funny how it goes like that.

I'm honestly surprised there isn't a fat sticker over the head unit or something that tells people this before buying. Most people have no idea what this cycle is or any cycle for that matter.

My truck also made the lifter noise and I used to use Mobil 1 0w-20.I have since switched to Amsoil 0w-20 and the lifter noise has decreased noticeably. My .02
