I think the problem was that Trac control was on, and I was either on a steep downhill the first time and then had lots of wheel slippage the second time in the dunes. I took it to the mountains last weekend and tried to get it to repro but couldn't. I don't think I could get the same conditions, not steep enough and no slippage. On the plus side it performed really well. Aired down and hit the trails pretty fast and it feels like a caddy compared to my bone-jarring Jeep. Had to get a poser pic...

I don't see any issues with the CV axles, at least no boot tears or anything visible externally. Also don't hear any clicking when driving in 4x4, which in the past has been indicative of issues with the CV axles in my Montero.

Until I hear it again I'll just assume it's an issue with my lack of understanding of new-fangled ABS traction control systems. :fingerscrossed:

Thanks JoeCOVA for trying to repro.

Not sure, haven't tried crawl control. It possibly reminded me of the sound my buddy's 4-Runner TRD makes in crawl control mode. I'll have to try this on the next trip. May do a desert run in the next couple weeks.

Couldn't repro this weekend but I don't think the hills were steep enough. But this is also making me lean towards it being a traction control issue. Just with my other older, simpler vehicles if I hear noises like this I assume I broke something, seems this may just be normal with computer controlled brake systems.

If I figure out anything is actually broken I'll post back here for posterity. Thanks again all, looking forward to learning more about the Taco, got big plans for it :D
