Driving down the street today going 30-35mph. Heard pop/bang come from the rear, assuming differential. Then lost power, felt like I was in neutral. Coasted into a parking lot with not power. Once stopped I tried to put the truck in park and it grinded trying to shift into park and would move if the brake was released or parking brake wasn't engaged.

Put the truck in 4L and it engaged in gear (drive or reverse). And doesn't grind when putting in park. Which was nice so I could get it to the shop that installed the gears & lockers that was close by.

    Few back story item's.

-It is a Limited that is fully locked (ARB LOCKERS) & regeared to 5.29(NITRO GEARS). On 34s with plenty of armor. So trucks a bit heavier that stock.

-last week heard a squealing noise that sounded like can siren. Did it for about 10 miles with also stopping and turning off truck throughout the day while working. Eventually left work to take it to the shop but then stopped making the noise on the way. Checked wheel bearings, drive shaft and everything seemed fine. Figure maybe some dirt in the brakes or something. Drove fine the few days since.

-Also went wheeling yesterday, drove roughly 40 miles with 25 on dirt. Engages 4w L & H no issues big issues with that.

    - I used the ARB rear locker a few times. And the first time was good. But the next 2 times the locker wouldn't engage and the compressor was running consistently.

What do any of you think? Did the differential blow complete. Or is it the lockers that messed up causing differential damage. I won't know more until he can rip it apart.

Or any ideas what could cause this?

Sounds like your rear differential is shot and is free wheeling and you’re just pulling in front wheel drive. Personally, I would’ve pulled over and flatbedded it home or to a shop when I heard the siren. The locker was also a concern, did you keep driving it after it started having issues? I’m not an expert at those, but maybe it wasn’t disengaged all the way or something?

Hope you can get it fixed for not too much :spending:

The grinding while putting it into park in 2H and 4H, but not 4L has me thinking transfer case.
