I'm not sure, but some people are naturally hopeful that bad things will go away.

Possibly , but that is extreme, and he wouldn't have been able to turn over the engine with a jump.
EDIT: Now that I've had a bit of go juice this morning, I'm afraid that you may be right. Here is hoping that it is something far less expensive.

True, but pointless if the fan belt or other accessory is in pieces. Besides the OP may not have a scanner in his arsenal yet.

I did that because it had not been cranked in 3 years. What else could I have done?:duel:

Well that changes things a bit. What was wrong with it to cause it not to be started in three years?

Ah, well that is important info not in your original post!

So truck sat for three years without use and now you changed fluids (which ones?) and are having this problem. Is that a correct summary?

Same symptoms. The guy I bought it from said it made a loud noise, quit and wouldn't do anything.

My nickel is on connecting rod bearing(s) seizing.

Engine cools down, bearing shrinks in journal. Start it up - knock knock knock, gets too hot (maybe from a clogged oil galley), then SHREIK, seizes and motor stops.

OK, so we don't know the history. For all you know the water pump is bad, or he ran it with no oil and the engine is foobar.
You were just the one to get to witness it's last breath.
    Where are you located?

I was going to fix it but I think I'll sell it. It was vehicle #6 so it's got to go. I work on old stuff like my 73 bronco or 67 mustang. This new stuff is for the birds. Thanks for all the insight
