3.5L EcoBoost has a lot more low end torque

Yeah, that 3.3L is the base model engine Ford uses as a workhorse engine. Those things can be very solid!

Toyota has been developing their own versions of the EcoBoost engines. It is definitely possible to see one trickle down eventually. Toyota moves relatively slow, but that's by design.

From what i've been told from those that serviced those ecoboost engines, your looking at a major expense when the time comes. You might wish you had the taco 3.5 back.

The ford didn't seem like a bad truck with the 3.3, it likes to be revved just like the 3.5 in the taco.

Yeah, we have them in our work vehicles. I'd much rather have an EcoBoost, but I don't spend the money lol. The engine is usually solid until we build up lots of idle hours.

Do what makes you happy, but I'll echo the people in this thread saying a custom tune would more than likely change your tune about your truck!

I would first check with a couple dealers and at least see what they would offer you. Where I live there is a shortage so trucks are in high demand. Dealers are selling Tacoma's that are a year old with 10k on them for more than they were new. I got a smoking deal on mine in June 2020. Sales manager I know said that you are lucky to get any deal on a new one.

I own both and I can say the EcoBoost is an outstanding power plant, fuel economy and power. The Tacoma is the best midsize truck out here by far but Toyota needs to look at a new power plant for the Tacoma and Tundra to compete with the rest of the market. Tacoma's reliability is top tier but power to fuel economy is lacking. I have also read that Tacoma and Tundra are both heading the direction of smaller displacement, turbo charged and hybrid as well. Looks like I need to get it tuned.

S5 fixes the dead peddle and shifting issues. ETC helps as well. Both make the truck drive "normal", if not aggressive. Tune probably helps even more. If you still need more, there is the manual if you're willing to take the hit.

As many have said - if there is a tax benefit in your state - then by all means look at a trade...I believe you will not take as big of a hit - as you fear - on trading on an SUV. Heck if you may be able to get such a great deal on the new vehicle your hit will be negligible. In complete candidness it has been MANY years since I've privately sold anything...I just do not like dealing with 'lookers" - to me to it is not worth my time (at this stage of life). I felt totally differently 20-30 years ago - HAHA.

I'm curious as to what vehicle you are considering. We have quite a few vehicles (GMC SUVs, and a Chevy Tahoe) and I recently bought vehicles for my mom and mother in law (both widows). I test drove/researched LOTS of vehicles. I ended up buying a RAV4 for my mother in law and a Subaru Forester for my mom. As for the Tacoma - it certainly takes getting used to - and it you. I drive my truck a LOT, bought it new in 2019 and I now have 98K miles. I'm on the highway a lot (albeit rural highways) as I have a 120 mile daily commute to my main office. I am quite pleased with the road manners at 60-70 MPH (with cruise). It is not the cushioned ride of our larger vehicles but I find it nice nonetheless...however I own a horse farm and I'm on trails and in 4x4 a lot, so perhaps I am blinded by the overall suitability to my needs. If you are still slightly on the fence, perhaps give it a little time to adjust...if you are just not happy with the truck - move on because I do not think you will suffer a devastating financial blow. GOOD LUCK!

Don't know whats meant by dead peddle needing S5. I guess if your in very hilly country that would be a good option, but 6th gear works quite well here for me. We have a combination of roads, and terrain here. I just let the truck pick the gear it needs to run in. Really can't see much difference in shift points vs my gen1 tundra over the same roads, plus its nice to have that extra 6th gear when traveling flatter roads to drop the rpm.

Go to kbb.com. It will estimate your trade in value. In my experience most dealers will match their quote.
If you go with private sale, make sure you sell for the quoted trade in value plus the applicable state taxes on that amount.
In Texas, the sales tax on an automobile is 6.25%. So if the kbb.com trade-in value is $35,000 you would need at least $37,187 from a private sale, just to match the trade in value (35,000 * 1.0625).
Do the math, then do what makes sense.

If people can trade their spouses at a sign of unhappiness, I don't see why we need a 4 page thread for a unhappy truck owner. Pretty simple solution to a simple problem.

I think you should just give it away. "It is more blessed to give than to receive." And only because I am a servant, I would be humbled to be the recipient of your truck. And I will drive all the way there to give you the opportunity to be generous.:D

In all seriousness, I'm surprised to hear this. I have a `21 DCSB 2.7 and I often wish I could afford the V6 because the 2.7 is so sluggish. I didn't expect anyone to think that the V6 was also sluggish. I've never driven one (since I don't want to know what I'm missing) but always figured they were lots quicker

    Preach to your lovers!!!

I drove my ACLB 2018 2.7L Taco for 3 years 42K miles. It did its job fine, once up to speed, but we have lots of mountain grades, and BOY was it slow. So slow, that even my elderly mother commented, that the truck is always straining, and whats wrong with it.

Now that I have a DCLB 3.5, it isn't a powerhouse, but its fine. I knew it going in.

However, the 2.7 and 3.5 isn't world's apart. I have a 4.0L Toyota and a 5.7L Toyota, both are better at power delivery than the 3.5

Having said that, I knew what the 3.5 is, and I have no complaints in my usage.

LOL...As someone who has been HAPPILY married for 29 years...I can tell you trading a truck is a MUCH cheaper/simpler decision (not that I've looked in to it).

But you will see that people spend WAY more time deciding on truck trades, etc, than they do on spouse trades ;)

Not if they consult their attorney...look up the (old) song by Johnny Taylor; "Cheaper to Keep Her"...famous line that most attorneys will tell you: "...If you're tied up, you better stay tied up...":spending:
AGAIN - I AM happily married, but I know business partners who have floated the idea...HAHA.

The average person who trades spouses - hardly consults an attorney BEFORE making the decision. If the average American made logical thoughtful decisions instead of decisions for instant gratifications, we would be living in a different time and different place ;)
