IMG_1209.jpg I apologize for the long story, but it's necessary.

The first new vehicle that I ever bought was a 1992 Toyota Deluxe Extended Cab 4x4 Pickup. Had it almost 19 years, 196K. Loved it. Bed was rusting away by 2011, and our family vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Sienna, had nearly the same number of miles. We decided to upgrade the truck. I wanted a Tacoma, but the Ridgeline rode more like a car, and the family liked it better. So that's what we got. To save a few bucks, I traded my Toyota, though my wife warned me I'd regret it. She was right. A few years later, I tracked down the owner and offered to buy it back. Of course he didn't want to. So I pined away for my 92 until January of last year when I came across a 92 SR5 with only 132K on it. It had some significant rust on one side, but the other side was pristine. I bought it, and I love driving it. Family hated it. No one would drive it let alone ride in it. Then while it was parked in front of the local hardware store, someone backed into the pristine side and drove off. It was still driveable, but the side had to be replaced; it could not be repaired. Couple all that with the fact that we were putting a ton of miles on our other vehicles for some unavoidable reasons. It just didn't make any sense to have a vehicle that was only getting used by me a couple times a week. Enter the 2019 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport Longbed. Premium and Technology packages. Black 5" running boards. Mud guards. Bed step. Black badge overlay and tailgate insert. Black chrome exhaust cap. Installed a BPF skid plate right away. It's a great truck, but damn, I miss my 92.

    Like, so many.
How long did it take you to recover from your bout with ROS (Ridgeline Ownership Syndrome)?

From a family vehicle standpoint, the Ridgeline has advantages that the Tacoma does not. It rides like a car with its uni-body construction. There is more cubby storage throughout the cabin, and there is storage space under the back seat with the seats in their normal position. The leg room is also greater than in the Tacoma. And the trunk in the bed provides decent-sized secure, weatherproof storage space. Most importantly, there is a space forward of the center console between the driver and passenger where my wife can set her purse! It was built to be a family vehicle. The Tacoma was built to be a truck. In an age where the four-door truck is becoming the new family sedan, it's somewhat refreshing the Toyota is sticking to its guns with the Tacoma design. To paraphrase a quote from The Quiet Man, when I want to drive a truck, I drive the Tacoma. When I want to drive a car, I drive the Ridgeline.
