I have a 2009 ext. cab 5 speed and recently it will not shift into 4lo. I have used 4hi on a regular basis and last week decided to shift to 4lo and could not get it to engage. I went through all of the troubleshooting to no avail. Also, pushing in the clutch to start the engine quit and the clutch override switch has to be pushed. I am thinking it is an electrical issue, maybe they use the same circuit or solenoid? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The clutch switch is the issue here. If it ain't working to start the engine, it won't let it go into 4 lo either.

Neutral is not necessary to shift to 4lo on a manual trans tacoma.

Exactly! If the switch is secure in the holder and the tab on the pedal depresses the plunger fully, then try putting a jumper in the connector. If it will crank with the jumper, remove it, and replace the clutch safety switch. Do not confuse it with the cruise clutch switch if equipped, which is at the top of the pedal stroke.

Thanks for the info. For some reason the clutch pedal tab was not depressing the switch. A small spacer added to the tab and all works perfectly. Thanks again.
