Low Fuel Pressure

Regarding my previous concerns that my Tacoma warranty may not be honored by Toyota, I did call Toyota USA at 800 331-4331. I was given the message that since I am in HI my concern would best be addressed by SERVCO Hawaii and gave me the phone number. I did call them, gave them the VIN and was told that it was still under warranty when I inquired. Okay then. I suppose we shall see, and I may be taking it to the Dealer for evaluation and see what they have to say. Of course I would be more than distressed to get a surprise humongous bill all of a sudden.
They told me the first appointment available is in the start of the 2nd week of January, so I'll be taking it in then. I suppose if it does this again, they suggested I bring it in as an emergency drop in, in which case it will be looked at as someone finds the time in between other appointments.

We shall see, and I'll let you know the outcome here.

True dat. But, I may just take it in and let them have a look at it if they are able to fit it in. I suppose I can do without it, though the issue is getting a ride back home once I drop it off with them. We shall see.

 

They should give you a loaner if it's still under warranty

 

I will be okay; I have surplus vehicles here up at the Schloss. Driveway fulla Jeeps, etc. Just looking for Toyota to figure this out for me since it seems beyond my capacity.
Interestingly the High Pressure fuel pump felt really really hot, but I don't have any thing to compare this to. Anybody know if their HP pump gets hot after operation?? LMK.

 

Should have mentioned, essentially same codes as before, with addition a code pulled up by a friend's "more advanced" OBD2 scanner than mine, "multiple cylinder misfire" which I forgot to write the number down for. This made me consider a bad engine ground, but it appeared to be on the driver's side inside frame rail and was intact. Not sure if there is another one I should look at, but bad engine ground came to mind.

 

Probably P0300?

Well, could have been P0300....but I just don't remember now. I should have written it down and only want to post up things that are as completely factual as possible, otherwise what I post could be misleading, and of course not beneficial to the collective knowledge of the forum and its members. I will try to contact my buddy and see if he remembers it, or if it is still on his screen--which I doubt.
I do not expect to hear from Toyota for a while at least, maybe a week, but hopefully this will turn out to be a successful repair. Could this be that my fuel pump has crapped out, and everything is related to fuel starvation? I suppose it could, but of course may be more sinister. Without the proper electronic equipment I am unable to check my fuel rail pressure, and it isn't just plugging in a gauge to my Schrader valve like it is on all my other vehicles with which I have experience. I'm not really sure I understand the balance between the tank fuel pump, and the high pressure pump, I also don't understand why the high pressure pump is so hot to the touch, as fuel flowing thru it should cool it down, but it was "about" in the 150 deg F range since I could only put my fingers on it for about half a second. My IR/laser thermometer was at home and not available for me to shoot a temperature. I do know that that temp could easily boil the gasoline going thru it, creating a vapor condition that doesn't squirt too well via injectors.
I've always been able to fix my vehicles myself, changed out cylinder heads and head gaskets, timing belts, clutches, full rebuilds on manual transmissions, piston swaps, axle swaps, anything and everything brake related, suspension related etc. While most problems seem to have been mechanical, I have repaired numerous fault codes/electronic problems. This one seems beyond me, and it's frustrating that it's not me getting my hands dirty on my own vehicle.

 

I'm not really sure but if the HPFP is that hot...... That may be THE problem, as you state..! Good luck man..

 

Agree... the dealership should be helping out there. Not saying mine does... cause they don't, but they should.

 

Well, if you're driving your '16 Tacomas, how about opening the hood up at the end of a trip of about 10 miles or more and feel your high pressure fuel pumps, and tell me if they're hot, or warm, or cool, etc. Could be helpful to me. I don't have another one I can test it out on.

 

If you can tell me where that is (sorry, haven't gotten that far into my Taco), I will try to see what I can do.

 

Yeah, where is MY HPFP..?? I'll gladly do that if I know what the hell I'm touching..!!

 

It's a round silver cylinder thing on the rear of the passenger side valve cover. About an inch or so tall and about an inch-inch 1/8 diameter. You will see a soft line coming in to it, and a metal hard line coming out and disappearing towards the Driver's side rear of the engine. I'd take a photo, but my Truck is at the Dealer's now.

I shot the silver canister that the video (and the one shown in the pic in your post) and it was between 100°F-115°F depending on how my laser temperature gun hit it.

 

Okay, that's a data point, provided that you measured it at the end of a reasonable distance/speed travel. 100-115F is cool enough you can rest your hand on it comfortably without getting burned. Thanks for the input.

 

It was after a 20-25 minute drive home from work, so it was pretty warm. Coolant temp was just under 200°F.
