Well you can't. Thats why so much problems. All you can know is if you have enough. So you overfill than allow excess to flow out through level tube.
On 2016 there is extra step. You have to make sure thermostat is fully open before you check level. For that you will need flat screwdriver and paper clip.
Once thermostat is open its the same procedure as on 2005-2015 trucks.

How long did they wait to check the fluid? They can only get an accurate reading around 110-113 degrees F. That's why I left my truck over night with the dealer. They told me it would take a few hours to even check and they wanted to test the surge into gear the next morning.

The tech mentioned having to wait 45 minutes to get temp to drop then warming it back up, other than that, I'm not really sure. In total, I waited almost 2 hours.

I'm not having issues with hard/delayed shifts. My complaint was a surge or lurching feeling while reversing up my driveway. Tech said oil level was fine and that the test drive was normal. I figured if I continue to have issues with it when I go in for 5k maintenance, I will bring it up again.

It very well could be that I'm just not used to the way the new vehicle drives.

What thermostat are you talking about ? engine or transmission ?
I have been looking for the transmission fluid level check procedure for the 2016 but have come up empty handed every time .
I also believe the 3rd gen guys are dealing with 2 issues .
1 , the trans is low on fluid and needs to be checked thoroughly and not rushed
2 , this surging they all speak of seems to be more engine related . Possibly with throttle position and the drive by wire theory .

EDIT . This is why T.W. rocks .
We hack out the problems before the dealer can

Here is last years post showing you how to properly check the fluid on the 2nd gen truck . All we have to do is implement the procedure for the thermostat ?

I personally still think there is nothing wrong with anybody's truck in here. .5qt or even 1 qt low on trans fluid you will not feel a difference. I bet they just said they filled it up and it was low just to make him happy. lol

Oh don't get me wrong I felt and still feel the same way about the .75 quart low. But for them to leave it over night to make sure they had the best reading and to duplicate the finding seems legit. But who knows :/

By "jerking" into gear are you guys saying while you're driving and the auto tranny shifts from like 3rd -> 4th, its jerky? Or when you go from park to reverse its slow?

Transmission thermostat. I dont have specific procedure listed for AC60 but it should be exactly the same as AB60 transmission. Their design is similar just size different. Somebody on the forum posted the pdf fiel which had new transmission and thermostat on it.

I was at the same dealer as mallcrawler. They told me the same thing.
He also mentioned they can't (I heard it as won't) check the level by removing the plug on the trans. They only check it with a computer connected, I assume, to the OBD2 port. Seems fishy to me.
Mine only does it when it's cold so they couldn't duplicate the issue.
They did find mine has a recall for the knee air bag bolts. Once the bolts come in and I go back they will let the trans cool down to try and duplicate my issue.

This may be irrelavant, but my 2006 4 cyl surges drastically when I turn the steering wheel on cold startup. Even when warm the engine surges slightly. Same happens if I flip the defroster on (with A/C). I think it is just the nature of drive-by-wire systems replacing the old IAC valve during idle. This doesn't go away until I start seeing the timing pull on my Ultragauge get out of the negative numbers.

Nope didn't notice it. Back out of garage, put it in drive, and off I go.

This morning it did not jerk into gear. I'll give it another morning to see.
