I have a 2017 4x4 TRD Offroad LB, 94k Miles, normal daily drive with a warranty that expired 4 days ago...

I started the truck up yesterday morning when it in the 20's which is extremely rare in my area and it cracked up wierd and was idling a little louder than normal... attributed to the cold. Drove maybe a mile and I hear a loud sucking noise and the Low Oil Pressure light comes on.

I pull over immediately and check to see if i had a leak under the truck or in the engine and nothing... I check the dip stick and oil level was fine.

I played it safe and had it towed to the dealer. It was 4pm yesterday when they got it and all the tech was able to do before they closed was check the oil filter and they said there were large metal pieces in the oil filter. They said that they can look at a few things Monday but it will most likely need a motor replacement.

I had no smoking or anything out of the ordinary prior to today. I did have a timing cover leak that was fixed under warranty maybe 40k miles ago.

What would cause this issue? Has this happened to anyone else on the forum?

In the worst case what is a motor replacement cost?

Brutal, I would personally just send it to an auction and let it be someone elses problem. :D

But they are likely not going to tear the engine down and quote a full replacement, short blocks are wicked expensive and there's a 4 month delay on them right now.

If it needs a motor, there is someone on the Texas page that has a new short block for sale. Hope it's nothing bad.

Heck, anytime you find metal pieces...large ones, its not good at all. You can bet if thats the case your going to need a new engine.

    Sorry this happened.

If the warranty is up the dealer will be an expensive place to have the work done.
People crash these trucks every day, I would have an independent shop put a low mileage used engine in if one is needed.

It would be interesting to see what failed. This shouldn’t happen.

    OP, any mods?

Also, I notice you had a posting about towing earlier this year. Have you been towing excessively?

No engine mods, just extra weight from topper, racks and sliders. Nothing crazy towing wise. Just random stuff with 4wheelers, wood, and misc stuff. I did get the tandem trailer with brakes but only hauled 2 4wheelers with it so maybe 2200 pounds with the trailer included. So nothing crazy or near limits.

I was towing a lot about a year ago doing some house renovations but nothing heavy and its all flat ground by me.

What was you oil change history on this? And what warranty did you have that expired 4 days ago?

I'd be curious what oil viscosity it has. I would hate to see OP pay for an engine if some else screwed up.

Could be sealant or debris from when the timing cover was resealed, but any tech that finds it will hide the evidence.

I had a 6 year 100k mile extended warranty with GS Protections through Toyota extra care, Platinum. Oil change every 10k Miles on the dot or little before.

Be aware the engine fan will be loud and move tons of unnecessary air on a very cold start, until the clutch oil warms up.

I had a low oil flash once. I turned it off immediately. I checked the oil dip stick, it was in the marks but nearer the low side so I put in a little oil and drove it to the mechanic I use and asked him to change the oil. It never flashed again, I chalked it up to driveway slant and oil level. If he found something in the oil filter he would have said something. He is the guy who found rusted trans cooling lines that the dealer replaced(after a bunch of calls and finally having the dealer call Toyota)

Start with asking to see the large metal pieces and pay them an in person visit next week to discuss further in person, and understand what exactly has failed, rather than going with it probably need a whole engine replacement. I will admit, IF there are large metal chunks in the oil,,, that is not good, but I would want to understand exactly what has failed and why, before writing it off of spending thousands and thousands on what they say.

If the engine was still running and not making terrible noises, based on the limited amount of information in your post, there is a chance the engine is fine or is repairable.

Sanity check: the low oil pressure light will light up if the ignition is on and the engine is not running and when the engine is idling on a steep slope.

I have no idea what the “loud sucking sound” could be. The only time I’ve heard something like that is when the air filter has been removed from the throttle body / carburetor and you rev the engine.

Yeah, that will be the plan when I hear back tomorrow. I'll try to speak with the advisor/tech to get a diagnosis of what caused the problem.

Yeah no bad noises and was running fine. I drove able 100ft after the low oil pressure notice popped up. I pulled over and turned the truck off and checked for leaks and the dip stick then turned it back on to see if it was a fluke for about 5-10 seconds and the notice popped up again and I turned the truck off. That small time idle it sounded fine, nothing strange.
