So my 2014 4.0 only has 19k on the motor. I bought it with 14,000 and just did my first oil change. Being a dummy I never checked the dip stick before and when I went to change the oil the level looked very low. I was able to drain about 5 quarts maybe a little less. Do you think any damage was done with such low oil or is this the normal amount most drain when doing an oil change? When I re filled 5 quarts seemed to fill it up but the manual I believe asks for 6.

5.5 quarts with filter. You should be fine.

It's fine, check oil every other fuel fill up. It's not so much use of oil sometimes as you can catch a small issue before it turns into a major issue thing. I doubt it did any damage if no ''oh shit'' lights came on.

It's possible someone just put in the typical 5 quarts many vehicles take when it was changed and nothing is amiss. Just check it regularly like one should do.

ok Ill keep an eye on it. I did a filter change with it and it was reading full at 5 quarts so maybe I didn't let it drain long enough. I was just worried since the motor has low miles and a long life ahead of her.

You should be fine, the dipstick on these are notorious for being hard to read, I usually let mine sit overnight before checking it.

I noticed that one side usually is consistent and the other side of the stick is all over the place.

^Protip: Remove dipstick, wait 5 minutes (for oil in the tube to drain down), then insert dipstick to get a reading.

The old filter probably has some oil in it. If you poke at the anti-drainback valve (rubber flap) through the holes at the base of the filter, more oil should come out of the filter.

I took 80 grit emery cloth and scuffed the last couple inches of mine up and then cleaned all the grit off. Makes it much easier to read. I went across the stick, not with it. [side to side, not up and down]

Bear in mind that low on the stick is 1.5 liters less than full - unlike most vehicles where it is 1 liter less.
This engine has more wiggle room before it is low.
