My 2021 Taco SR, with less than 400 MILES, had extremely low power steering fluid so I took it to the local dealership and they kept it to have a look. Master technician at the local Toyota dealership found that it was leaking in the steering rack, so they replaced it, which they said was a total pain in the butt btw. Anyway, after finishing it they attempted a test drive and it spewed fluid everywhere (their words). They said the replacement (OEM) steering rack had a crack in it (only visible under high-pressure operation), which caused the 2nd leak they experienced. So, they've ordered another rack and are installing this week. I will keep everyone ppstwd after getting it back!

I hope you didn't add ATF-WS as was suggested by a couple people here...
    It takes ATF Dexron II/III.

It is funny that I was getting some non-greasy splashes of fluid in the front wheel wells on the inboard side. Not long after, I noticed that the PS res was a bit low. Not wanting to buy a whole bottle, I added some Mazda M5 ATF I that I already had for the PS on our Mazda. It is compatible with Dexron II / III also. Since (probably 10k or so?), the level has not changed and the splashes are gone.

Coincidence? Maybe. But, I'll take it.

Not that I can see. I'm going to take a very close look at the next oil change. The weird part is that it stopped after adding the Mazda stuff. It might have conditioned the seals?

I added some dye. I haven't gotten underneath to check it out though.

If it is the timing cover, I would investigate an external seal versus a tear down. Maybe a good cleaning and a fillet of sealant? Seam silly to do the full job just for a leak at the head joint?

TBH, idk the whole breakdown of the parts or what could be potentially leaking. Maybe once I dig further I'll wrap my head around it. Hopefully it won't take a full teardown.

The timing chain cover overlaps the crankcase to cylinder head joint. The differential expansion and a bit of a flange or something right there tends to cause a failure in the liquid gasket seal and causes a leak.

I'm thinking that something should be possible to seal it externally without a major disassembly.

Interesting, that makes sense. Good job in explaining that. Wonder why it's only the pass side?

I think it has something to do with the mounting for the PS pump? That is where that flange / feature comes in?
