Tomorrow I'm taking my truck in for the 15k service.

When scheduling the appointment, I asked to have the fluid checked in the tranny as I suspect I'm low. I have some of the issues that are mentioned to make me suspect.
The person on the phone said they would have to duplicate the issue in order to check. We went round and round, and still I think they are going to try and blow me off when I get there with the truck tomorrow.

So what I want to do is demand they do the fluid level check, regardless of it they can duplicate a symptom. I'll pay if I have to, but I need the peace of mind of knowing with certainty I'm good on tranny fluid...

My question is what is the actual procedure called to have them do the physical check, where they open up the tranny and add fluid until it weeps out of the overflow? If I'm not mistaken, this is NOT the tech stream type of check.

I want to be crystal clear to the service advisor when I get there as to what I want done. So I'd like to use the proper terminology.

    Thx guys!

Correct, tell them you want them to manually check the fluid level and not check it with the Techstream software. In order for them to check the fluid they have to let it get to a certain temperature, which means if you drive the vehicle there they will have to have it for a few hours more than likely.

Print out the procedure and take it with you to show them that is what you want done.

Maybe I'm just overly cynical, but even if they told me they checked it and it was low by X amount, I wouldn't believe they actually checked it and are just blowing smoke to appease me. I'd strongly suggest you follow the procedure and check it yourself so you know whether it's low or not and then you can go in there and tell them you checked it and know that it's low. And afterward, you can check it again to verify they topped it off. It's the only way I'd have any piece of mind on this particular issue.

My suggestion is this...ask them to physically check the fluid level...if they "bock" at that... say ... "I'll pay if it's full, but if it's low...you pay".... (But I must watch it being performed)..!! (Bring the printout that shows the proper way to check, so that they know YOU know...you know?)

That way they have nothing to lose...if it's good... you pay...if it's low Toyota pays.... They have nothing to lose with this arrangement....

You might want to add............ "by not checking my tranny as I requested, you may lose any future business from me and my family/friends..."

My dealership also refused to check my trans fluid level. I purchased Online factory service manual and Chiltons DIY online manual. I checked the fluid level myself and it was 7/8 of a quart low. I let it cool to below 95 deg. and topped it off with the engine running. Neither manual states if this should be done with the engine running like almost every other car in the world or with the engine off like on Honda's Does anyone know which way it should be checked?

Engine running in temp check mode, per the factory service manual.
