I use a ratchet to tighten just about everything. It's about a foot long. I know what 50 pounds of force feels like (close enough anyway) You make it sound like everyone has just been playing Russian Roulette for 100 yrs.

You know, refineries have just gone over to hydraulic torquing over the last 10-15 yrs.

About coinciding with smart phone usage.

I imagine you probably needed new underwear after the LBJ gave out while driving

That'll do it. Both times I've gone to Pismo it was a similar story as when I was up in Tahoe during the winter. Beach sand/saltwater is very unforgiving.

Lol...no kidding. Luckily it didn't give out. It was the cam alignment nut.

When turning left the truck would go straight for just moment and then hook and turn. My friend following me got on the radio and told me my passenger tire looked funny.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Considering how badly designed the LBJs are, and how much of a critical componant the LBJs are... you kind of are "playing russian roulette" by not properly torquing them.

I just don't see how the extra 2 minutes it takes to torque them properly is any kind of an inconvinience. It's worth it to me, just for the peace of mind that I did it right.

Ya, well 5 ugga duggas is not the same as a different guy's 5 ugga duggas. On a componant that could potentially kill me, and others, under failure... I'd perfer to just make it 59 ft pounds (actually I do 60 ft pounds because 59 ft lbs just seems dumb to me... lol)

That's just it. 60#'s would NOT give me peace of mind. I can bite a 60# nut loose. I bet mines 80.

However 5 ugga duggas sounds kind of high. laughs.
    It's 20 pounds an uuga and 5 a duuga i heard.

It's not about just being tight enough... it's also about... overtigten the bolt and you're possibly buying a new spindle.

In CA? I don't think they use those salt chems in CA. Mostly sand AFAIK

There's something they use up in Tahoe that's not road salt but it's a different chemical. When I was up there in Feb (CA side) they said it gets used during the really heavy snow months. I had my truck in a local shop for a day getting the radiator hose fixed and the guy that owned it has a 3rd gen 4runner with a Swiss cheese frame, he said it was from the stuff they put on the roads. They claim it's safer than road salt but I guess it isn't

So you feel that torquing ~33% over what the engineers designed the part to withstand is good enough?

I mean... I guess that's cool and all. I just happen to defer to the engineers who designed the part... Seems like they put the time and money into the R&D to know what they're talking about.

You gotta trust the engineers on something like this. They designed it to perform properly without breaking, over and under torquing changes that. Trust me I’m an engineer lol

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

    Couple things...
People also regularly re-use the bolts (not a good idea)
People regularly overtorque the bolts thinking 59 ft lbs is not enough (also not a good idea)

BOTH of those thing can be the CAUSE of the bolt backing out... because

    A) the bolt is designed to be 1 time torque (because the bolt stretches when torqued).
    B) over torquing can stretch the bolt too far.

Both A and B can CAUSE the bolt to back out.

(I specifically underline "can" because it "can" happen and would be part of the calculation of the torque spec... not saying it will... so no body needs to start having heart palpitations when reaching for the quote button)

You are 1000% right all bolts stretch when installed and this effects the properties of them. Think of head studs that are “torque to yield” they’re one time use, but for a slightly different reason
