Understood, just saying in general for that last comment, my bad, kinda sidelined the thread slightly.

No worries. Sidelining a thread is a sport around here

Rubs off on me sometimes and other times its fun. I would say that OP may want to check his rear axle bearings, if the breather flooded or got clogged it can blow the bearings, I got worse gas mileage before getting that one fixed.

This thread is really confusing when only a few people note what engine they're running. Even the original poster didn't.
I've asked this same question on this and other threads. I have a '98 SR5 4X4 with the 3.4 V6 and auto trans. It gets 19MPG on the highway, period. I have tried everything including changing to different tires, changing to synthetic oil, changing brands and grades of gas, slowing down, speeding up... I keep records and zero the odo at every fillup - and the mileage varies only a small amount. The very absolute best I ever got was 19.6 mpg, and that was literally with a tailwind. It gets 17ish around town. The posted numbers run from 17 to 22mpg, with 19 being combined city/hwy, but depend a lot on who's posting them. Some sites list higher, some lower. Bottom line - 19 is the best I get and I have to live that. Harder when wife's car gets near 30 and she's prone to rubbing it in. LOL
