Good choice, we decided to go automatic 4wd. We are reinforcing complete frame and already had 3/16 steel skid plates which last section had to be fab. The first few are Skid Row. Be safe

    Hmmm...
CFS makes an aluminum drop in, two core radiator that’s the same volume as a C6 radiator. From what I understand there’s a company in AU that makes an engine adapter for an LS to the Toyota R155 manual 5 speed. Some guy on YouTube has an LS mounted to a R155F in a Dodge power wagon. Don’t ask me it’s a mess but he said he uses it as his tow rig.
Second Gen. Tacoma rear end is the same one Toyota used in the first Gen. Tundra & Sequoya so it’s pretty stout. Not as stout as a Ford 9” or the 8.8” from a Ford Explorer that bolts into a Gen 1.
I found a shop that specializes in LS swaps and they want to do a 5.7 as they have a alloy block ready. I kind of want a 4.8 that will rev to 7k. I just had my neighbor bid on an 05 Reg five lug hit in the rear. So with a 3100 lbs SWB Reg cab, an LS, 5 spd manual, Eaton torsion w/ 3.58 gear, 245/50’s mounted on 18x8.5 wheels and the biggest quietest exhaust system we can do should be fun teasing Mustangs and Camaros. Selling my rag top to help with some of the funds. I should hopefully have less than $25k in the truck but I’m sure I will keep up grading as I go. Like the set of FRS bucket seats I have in our spare bedroom. And if you have all that go fast I will have to install some big StopTech’s and drop the ride hight a inch or two. I should paint the body work but I think I will just leave the sealer to give it a little ratty look. I love to find some 5 lug wider steel wheels I could do hub caps on. But I need an 18” Wheel for the front brakes. Sorry I like to be able to stop‼️

You could easily fit some 275's out back. You'll need that extra foot print. That'll be one heck of a sleeper!

Ummm...The 5.7 is either LS1 or LS6. Heavier valve springs and spin it to 7k and make way more power than a 4.8.

Thank You Sir! but too much bite and things could break! Say like a stock transmission or ...?
Just because some guy on YouTube is using the stock trans for a tow vehicle IDK...

Yes I know cubic inches equals more horsepower but from what I understand the heads are all interchangeable and a 5.7 going to make more torque Ie. break parts. Plus a 4.8 with good flow can make more than enough HP for this old man. My concern is wheel hop, I much rather have wheel spin...
Now I just need to find a truck on the cheap, parts to repair, some 6 lug leafs just for starters...
I fully admit a lot of the work is above my skill level and tools that I don’t possess. I like tinker on street suspensions to make vehicles handle.

If I were you, the 5.7 would be way more interesting. We have TR beadlock 17x8.5 that we are considering and a full float 40 spline rear axle assembly but it is spooled. My son says try it and decide. TTR Bead locks BFG KR2.jpg he TRs would bolt on rear axle assembly, and adaptors would be required for front. We installed tundra brakes a long time ago, although we have race brakes if needed. We are sicking with auto transmission and 4wd. We should be back at it next week. I will pull motor and start reinforcing frame, put motor back in and tack engine cage, pull motor complete cage. It has king 8" coilovers and 10" king bypass shocks. My son wants to change shock mounts and install the 10" coilovers. As far as radiator, not clear what our plan is until we get further along. It had dual batteries prior to swap. My son also has bedside panels, which not clear about. I think he is thinking lose the bed and build tubing. This is all bit much when all I asked was could he help me with more horsepower lol. Our goal for completion is end of Dec early Jan.

I agree about slow corners and parking, but my son says I should try it. Here is photo prior to engine swap tacoma.jpg

lol, transmissions can be expensive, my son has blown up two allisons that valued at 6-7k each. He now seems to have settled with 1020hp. He rebuilds everything himself, so I guess he does ok on his own; 26 years old.

Does anyone have an average cost for a full engine swap? Parts and/or labor.

I would say it has a lot to do with how much of the work can you do, and if not much, then it depends on how far beyond just a motor swap do you want to go; frame reinforcing/engine cage are additions. A motor can be found at most junk yards, classifieds, or leave it to the shop. If you have a shop in mind, you should discuss it with them. The last thing you want is to have your trk sit in a shop, and no one work on it. A simple engine swap with manual tranny 2wd, (cxracing mounts and headers) one could do it probably in a week certainly less than a month at a shop. 5k certainly less than 10k. If any changes with upgrades, can eat every bit of 15k.

go to earlier in this thread, and I believe it is tacotunner that has completed his install, and was driving around untill he decided to do more work to it.

Don't need to go fancy just want more power than the taco has and a 4x4 drive. Probably a comfortable ride is the most important thing so a shop is probably the best move.

The heads are interchangeable (well except for gen iii cathedral ports vs gen iv rectangle ports), but that doesn't mean they are all equal. Depends on what you are trying to do. The 5.7 will have the better flowing heads.

If you want 4wd, tacotunner achieved the header issues earlier in thread, otherwise custom headers will be required; 1500 bucks. The issue we had, was without headers, we could not move forward to get it running, therefore smashed headers in there, knowing custom headers will be needed. We went with auto tranny, although manual is smaller offering more room for headers.

I would be concerned for the tranny. The LS1 is capable of churning out 3x the hp the taco Tranny was designed to handle. The rear end can be changed to a Ford 9” but the tranny isn’t that easy.
