So I found out something interesting about summit racing. If you buy one of their "kits" that "they" put together, most likely are put together by the manufacturer. Meanwhile Summit orders the parts individually and has them on the shelf and doesn't lot the parts themselves. So, while they have a kit available it has a long lead time, but if you scroll down to their Replacement Parts section you will find all the parts of the kit, and usually they have it on the shelf ready to ship today. So I went this route and canceled my order for the kit as it cut the lead time by months! Wish I figured this out sooner but hey, learning ain't easy. Tonight the cam went in, see below for the timing card. I don't have the right bolts for the new plate that is tapered (cue the credit card) but that's ok, I can get the lifters and trays in and swap to the correct bolts early next week before I throw the oil pump and timing parts on.

Threw in some new lifters. Pretty straightforward, pop them into new trays, oil them up, glob on some assembly lube and drop them into the block and torque to spec. Next step will be rearranging the garage to get the hoist back out and getting the engine off the stand so I can access the bits on the rear of the block. That's a job for tomorrow.

New rear cover gasket and rear main seal in. Hidden is the new billet oil barbell behind it. Splashed some rtv on the bottom edge of the block and torqued to 18ft/lbs. Feels like hurry up and wait with each new part but that's just the nature of a first time build I suppose. Should slap together pretty quick in the next week or so after the paint dries.

Eh part of me thinks it's better to have it trickle in anyways. Rather than have a mountain of parts and a bigger project on your hands.

Not that it's not a big project. But small bites is good.

Yes and no. It would be nice to slap the engine together in a fluid rhythm, less chance to screw something up. The swap itself is gonna be hard just from the standpoint of that being where there are a lot of unknowns. But also good because it pushes the swap out into the fall where the weather will be more tolerable since this project won't fit in the garage. I want to have it done by my birthday at the latest, in December. Still a lot of questions I need to figure. Like, what length drive belt do I need? How do I hook up the obdii? Will the cx racing mounts align the motor correctly to the transmission? Where can I find a front bumper? How's the exhaust gonna work?

So many questions I'll need to sort through and most of those can't be figured out until the 5vz is out, so I'm just anxious to get to that point so I can start answering them.

I'll put you in the list but I really don't think that will happen. I'm stalling a bit but need to get emails to Advanced Adapters to figure out what I can do.

Ok so maybe I'm losing my mind but it appears several posts in this thread were deleted, including my own? There was some good transmission information here that is now gone.

In the past when posts get deleted, the original is gone but the replies saty. Not this time around though. The response I got from the mods was "yes. One guy got spammed" when I asked why multiple posts from multiple people are missing.

Anyways back to the engine. I got some parts trickling in, like some engine paint. :spy:
    PXL_20230614_004740421.jpg

Today I spent a little time today and finally installed the cam retainer plate with the correct countersunk bolts. Threw on the timing chain and oil pump. Lubed the pump as well, surprised it comes dry in the first place. Was going to throw on the timing cover but there were a few extra seals in the kit I bought that I didn't immediately recognize where they went so need to do some homework before that goes in.
    PXL_20230615_034746642.jpg

And with the slow trickle of parts I finally got all my valvetrain parts so a trip to the machine shop before work and I should have the heads ready in a week or so. Still a long road ahead on this project.

Hit that thing with a torch before paint, bake some of the oil out and get the moisture off. I like the color you chose too

That's not a bad idea with the torch. Was gonna rough it up with paper since I've already degreased the thing but in the tight spots, probably not a bad idea. I figure I'll get the heads and pan on and paint it all in one go :anonymous:

And if I shared the color now, it would ruin the surprise :D the peanut gallery can't say "that's gonna look dumb" but rather "that is dumb" once it's done.

I've painted an entire engine purple before so it can't be that dumb. I'm hoping for a two tone personally red heads and yellow block. Ketchup and mustard haha

Wait, matte grey is not a dumb choice.

I'm hoping for some red with green bits, like salsa.
