LT or SAS?... that is the question...

I'm planning for the future and have been doing a lot of reading. I'm fairly sure I want to eventually go SAS. For most of the offroading I do I think SAS would be better. I'm never going to be the guy blasting across a dessert at 100mph in my truck. SAS is more customizable and requires a bit of RnD which apeals to me. I also would like to fit 35s. LT will make fitting 35s a challange but should provide better roadability. I currenty use the truck as a DD and would like to do some overlanding trips at some point so how it handels on the road is a concern. I'm just curious about what other's on here have experienced. There are many options and variations for both setups and I'd like to hear what other's have tried. For those that have LT or SAS what pros and cons have you guys run into with each setup? Any outstanding successes or failures?

Well my first question would be what's your budget? If you have a tight budget i would say just a nice Mid travel set up for Overlanding is really all you need.

I'm currently writing a quote for a similar project, 2000 3.4 SAS that wants 35's, you're more than welcome to give the shop a call and I can give you very accurate rundown of costs associated with the project. And when I say currently, I mean that's what I'm doing right now, customer called this morning.

Yes, mid travel on 32-33" tires would probably be best for most overlanding. But that will only be a portion of the wheeling I plan to do. I expect I will be doing more crawling and mudding. There is a ballance in there somewhere. As for the budget... I don't intend to spend massive amounts on the lift but I'm not afraid of the cost. In the short term I may go OME to get 2.5-3" of lift and a set of 33s at first. If I eventually go SAS I would like to do 4 link front and rear.

I may take you up on that. I have a lot of planning to do now matter what route i eventually go. I want to do most of the install work myself with the help of a friend or two at times.

Totally, we'll be doing the work on this one and I'm currently sitting at about 7k, have a few more things to add like the rear diff and gears but it's getting close

So just going by that you do not want to do an SAS because it does in fact cost massive amounts money to link a truck front and rear. Also a 4 link it's not the greatest option in the front of these rigs a 3 link with the panhard/track bar is much easier to do right.

I'm linked front and rear and have about 30,000 into my swap and I did all the labor granted my axles are bling! At a minimum linking your truck front and rear with you doing everything yourself would run you at least 15,000 when all said and done.

Linking front and rear all at once would get pricey quickly. I wouldn"t link the rear right away anyway... More of a long term goal. It may never happen and that is fine. Engeneering and building it would be half the fun. Building a good LT can get up there as well.

fully armored, 4.88, 33 skinnies, tundra brakes, a REAL cold air intake.
most of where your truck goes depends on how skilled you are at driving it. As for "over landing" SAS is not the BEST option, I would have to agree with @JLee that mid travel is all you need. rock crawling is not something to do fully loaded. I think of my truck as a car camper. I bring lots of sh!t but leave it at camp if I really want to wheel.

I had a blast building mine if you can link the rear some day it's totally worth it here is some inspiration.

It's a 3 link with a pan hard so the gas tank can stay in the stock location. 16" in the rear and 14" of vertical travel in the front and 51" of articulation.

So 3 link may be a better route that a 4 link... I will definitely keep that in mind!!!
