Thanks guys for all the info . . . TW is the BEST! I'm coming up on this service at my next oil change and am glad this thread came up. One question I have is, how much torque is supposed to be on the "propeller shaft bolt?" I found this but is 101 ft-lbs correct? I also found this but it doesn't contain the torque value.

We I used the PB Blaster stuff and it didn't help one damn bit. I am going to call around to a couple of the local garages to see if someone can toss it on a lift and change it for me. I would think it would take less than 30 minutes to do, cost maybe $20? Hell I'll even do the work.

haha... you just need some air tools or a breaker bar with some muscles. Try putting breaker bar on it, and stand on the end of the breaker bar.

I did this when lug nutz were stuck on my wheels. There was only one time when it didn't work, then I called my friend which is a body builder and got it loose, dood acutually picked up the front end of the car..... I was impressed...

Just take it to a backyard mechanic and have them loosen it for you. Should be free, then go home and do the work. Just say, man can you use your air tools to loosen this bolt.... I'm too much of a girly man.... look at my twig like arms..... JUST JOKING!

    papa,
I have the air tools and the breaker bar actually, the problem is I don't have enough clearance on my ramps to use the 17" breaker bar. I can't get enough leverage. I have a impact wrench, but not the needed impact type hex socket. I don't want to use non-air tool rated sockets, they could shatter from the impact wrench force.
I might do what you said in take it some where and just have them loosen the plugs then go home and finish it myself.

    Yeah,

Or you can get a mini torch and heat up the plugs a little, careful not to melt anything and take to it. If that doesn't work, yeah take it to a shop. Just be careful

Heat on a diff plug is not a good idea, if you get it hot enough to do any good you are gonna have charcoal sludge inside the pumpkin

I don't think I'll do the heat thing, but I did try and tap the plugs with a hammer.

Try taping your wrench with a hammer, you can use your non-impact socket with the impact just be careful. 1/2" drive socket I hope?

Nope, the 10mm hex socket I have is only a 3/8. I might run to Harbor Freight Tools and pick up a set of hex 1/2" impact drivers. I think I can get a set of 6 for like $24. Gives me an excuse to buy more tools:D

Well I bought some impact hex sockets and tried using my impact wrench to get the drain plugs off the front diff. No go. They are frozen solid. Looks like I am going to be taking the truck some place.:frusty::frusty::frusty:

I remember trying to get the socket head bolt out of my front diffential on my 95 Tacoma. I could never get it out. Why can't they use a regular bolt there?
