Going to add half a quart to my manual transmission. I thought I read somewhere with Lucas saying you don’t have to drain any fluid first. Wouldn’t it start overflowing if you didn’t? I’m gonna pay a garage as I don’t have a lift. Wanted to make sure first. No need to drain out some fluid first???

Ideally you'd add it with fresh GL4 gear oil during the fluid replacement.

There's a ratio on the bottle to follow.

You don't need a lift to change any fluid on these trucks.

    Save the cash.

Fair, I should take that advice.

Bad back here, yet I was lifting heavy shit at the shop at work, only to get off work and undo the front end of a Tacoma yanking off brakes, spindles, cv axles, etc

    I'm too stubborn :anonymous:

The fluid was changed not that long ago. Question remains unanswered. Would I need to have a half quart drained first? The reason I asked is because I thought I read somewhere that Lucas says no need to drain some fluid first. Not sure how that makes sense, Lucas saying that.Would like to know before going to some shop.

    For me that was yesterday.

Now I'm about to pick up the trailer and empty stuff out of storage to do a dump run.

    I must hate myself :bananadead:

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Most times when people add the additive the fluid is low !!

Simple physics adding any liquid to a container will increase volume !!

So yes check the level though your mechanics should do this !

Normally on a manual trans, you add the fluid up to the level of the fill plug so it would probably need some drained out. I think you could take the shifter off and pour more oil in and have it over the fill plug but it may cause issues with the oil foaming up or just run out the vent.

Also Lucas oil stabilizer is snake oil. the best thing to do is get some gl-4 gear oil that is spec'ed in the owners manual and top it up with that, it will have the correct additives and weight for your transmission. Also the correct gear oil would do the same thing those little gear toy things at the auto parts store checkout do but cost less and be a better product than Lucas oil stabilizer.

I've never tried Lucas but I have added lubegard and noticed a difference in shifting for a 270,000 mile old automatic transmission. I'd measure how much the lucas fluid recommends, remove that from the drain hole, and then add the lucas fluid.

Funny thing. Lucas Oil Stabilizer directions said “no need to drain fluid beforehand.” WTH? Found a cool auto strip mall. You know, the ones with 7 repair shops in a row? Amazingly, one shop was kind enough to have taken out some engine oil to add half a quart Lucas for free! Going back this Monday and they’ll probably add it to my manual trans for very little $ . It’ll take them 10 minutes. Other places want $45. Yes…I have spec fluid in there now. What happened (common complaint) is that changing fluid for the first time caused many to hear an annoying whine sound when shifting ONLY during warmer weather. I’m gonna have them add half a quart and see if that lessens the whine. I will report back here with the results. Might take 300 miles or so as Lucas says it takes awhile. Sorry for this long reply. And yes…loud sewing machine noise on cold startups has lessened after adding it to engine oil. I only added half a quart to be safe. Thanks for reading.

P.S. Please, I’m 110 yrs. old. okay? (Do it yourself, do it yourself !).
