Never heard of this before but found out the hard way: Recently spent about two hours changing a flat in the middle of nowhere. Stock wheels, lug nuts, and wrench. Over the years I've changed flats maybe 3 times.

I had to hammer the wrench on the lug nuts -hence the two hours. Toyota later said that some lug nuts are two pieces and they expand. It can take years but they don't have a fixed number of years.

So just a heads up. Seems odd I didn't see any mentions of this on this site. Steel replacement lug nuts cost about $90. Good luck out there.

Yea it's a common problem with alot of modern lug nuts, the metal "cap" swells either from rust forming under it or impacting on it especially with a worn out or wrong size socket over time.

I see it most often on Ford and Dodge trucks, solution is one piece lug nuts that don't have a cap.
