    Hello All:
I'm due to replace my tires and the last time I had the tires rotated, I was told by the gentleman at Costco that my lug nuts were stripped and needed to be replaced. I've looked at several places on line and over the phone for new lug nuts, i.e. Amazon, Auto Zone, along with a slew of others, as well as a Toyota parts department. The Toyota parts guy said they didn't have any in stock and didn't know when they'd be back in stock, and most other online sites are either listing them at a ridiculously low price (making me think they're not OEM, or some cheap knock off), or they're priced so crazy high that I think I'm getting ripped off. Can anybody shed some light on what size I need, where I should get them, and approximately what I should be paying for these? I think I'm wanting the 12X1.5 but I've seen a couple of different hex sizes associated with the 12X1.5, which I have no idea means. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need lugs with washers for your alloys.

USD would probably be 1.50 each.

your lug nuts are probably swollen. Toyota went with a pressed in cap instead of solid steel nuts. Over time the cap swells from being abused by impact guns.

Hmmm, never knew lug nuts could get swollen. Then again, I'm not mechanically inclined so I'm glad I happened across this forum and found that out. Thanks for the info.

If you have the stock lug wrench only, make sure it fits the hex head on the new ones you buy. Don't want to be on the side of the road only to find out the wrench is too big or small for the replacements. I believe the stock hex head size is 21mm, but I could be misremembering it that. The 12x1.5 bolt/thread can have a different head, so some replacements might need a 19mm (3/4) socket vs the stock 21mm socket; that's what the different hex size means.

Thank you. As crazy as this sounds I'll probably bring in my lug wrench to whenever I get these lug nuts. Then I'll tell the Costco guys what size hex they are so don't strip these new ones.

It's most like what others have said, your lug nuts swelled a bit and they had to go next size up socket because the right sized socket no longer fit. They do make a half-size step up lug nut socket for this problem, but the shop might not have had, the tech wasn't aware of the swelling issue and assumed the 21mm was too small, or yours were really bad.

My nuts were swollen. Rough finding out about something like that at Discount Tire.

They don't actually swell but it has that appearance. OEM shank style wheel nuts have a chrome shell that deforms when hit by air guns and battery impact wrenches. The lug nut itself is likely fine but a socket will not easily slide over a deformed shell. Any current Toyota 12mm shank lug nut will fit. I currently have the lug nuts from my daughter’s 2024 Corolla on my 07. They are chrome and don't have the shell.

I hate swollen nuts. Discount guys told me about my swollen nuts. Glad they did. Traded out my chromes for some black nuts and never looked back. Bezos store had them. Not expensive.
