Just to help the community: I replaced my Tacoma SR steel rims with 2016 4-Runner rims and tires. The lugnuts were too short (the Toyota dealership couldn't rotate my tires at the 5K service.. now I understand why) so I replaced them with Dorman RNB-611-211 from Summit Racing. They were $2.49 each and arrived in 3 business days from Summit (free shipping over $49.00)

It took 6 turns to remove the old lugnuts and 11 1/3 turns to install the new ones. Muchhhhh safer ....

New one on left and old on right:

Oh man! Glad you replaced them. The ones on the right are referred to as acorn style and definitely not for alloy wheels. Glad you got the correct lugnuts on.

Thank you Eat! I didn't realize just how bad they were until I mounted the new ones (wow).

No doubt diesel ... that was a valuable "lesson learned". I hope the post helps another new Taco owner somewhere down the line.

Do the Dorman's have the tapered end to accommodate your spare steel wheel? Hard to tell from the picture. OEM shank style nuts do.

If, by chance, yours don't....throw 6 of your acorn steel wheels nuts in a zip lock bag for emergencies.

Some alloy wheels are designed to use an acorn nut. The 4Runner rims are not. Hopefully the lug nut seats weren't damaged from the acorn nuts. I've seen seats deformed and mushroomed from this type of thing...especially where an impact was involved

Hi Jane .. I was fortunate enough to grab a 17 inch steel wheel for the spare (swap from the 16s I had) and I am definitely following your guidance - I just placed 6 spare acorn lugs in my seat compartment. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

If it's tapered then your good. No need to carry the extra acorns.

That doesn't look like a taper meant to be used with a steel spare. It looks like just a slight bevel intended to make it easier to start the lug into the alloy wheel. I'd still carry 6 of the acorn nuts to use with the spare.

Huh? I have Methods and take only "acorn" lug nuts known as lugcentric.
The OEM wheels had the left type nuts.

I did the same thing. My 17 Taco Off-Road was totaled by a tornado, so I stole the wheels for my next Taco. Now I have a 22 SR that had steel wheels. I did not think about the lug nuts, and today the dealership notified me at my 5K rotation. Lesson learned.
