I can attest to that. It's fine as long as you know what you're buying. I had my old 1990 Mustang painted by Maaco. It was a $500 special they had going on. Looked pretty decent after the paint job but quickly degraded and turned to shit. The paint was an upgrade from what the car was before and I was a broke college student at the time so it worked. Now, 10 years later and more financial resources I would never go to Maaco.

For something you are just going to abuse, Maaco will be fine. Prep is non-existent (basically a cleaning “bath”) and paint is put on too thick (I had some runs on creases). Just know what to expect and make the decision based off that

Earl Scheib ($29.95 any car any color) did a better job.

Don’t do it. My cousin had parts painted from them & ended up chipping within 6 months. I went in to get a quote & he said $1200 for single stage no clear coat, that’s when I walked out. Found a local guy who worked a Gerber Collision & he did the job on the side for $2500 with PPG paint, shop clear coat & heat baked the car afterwards. Don’t cheap out on paint if you actually want to keep your car.

do all the prep you want they still use garbage low quality paint, you end up with a paint job that falls apart. Does that make good sense? Only if you dump the car soon as the shitty paint dries.

this is a fantastic option. My dad used to do this. He was a really good painter, so he would rent a paint booth and do a few a year for extra money

Really simple. Anyone who thinks Maaco does good work or says my maaco paint was great has never seen either.

Somewhat true, but Maaco is definitely the Harbor Freight of paint shops. And I've seen enough of their work to back that statement up.

I paid $1,850 to have the rocker panels and cab corners replaced on my 4 door duramax. You can’t tell it’s been touched. Wonder what maaco would have charged?

it depends heavily on the location. One of the Maacos we used to have around here was a custom hot rod shop turned into a maaco franchise so they could get insurance jobs since the economy sucked and custom rods werent paying the bills. Same employees who took the same time and care just using cheaper materials. I never had them paint a whole car but they did the rear bumper on my mazdaspeed (blue pearl color) and it looked better than the factory paint did.

Since you get what you pay for with paintjobs, it's better to buy once than twice... or thrice

Then if you think about it, a cheap job will always end up costing more on the long term than a pricier better quality job

Not necessarily true. If corporate policy and supply chain dictates low quality paint then every Maaco would have the same shit paint job. So yes they all suck.

Your are correct. It’s not necessarily the employees at Maaco that are bad. It’s Macco’s business model. It’s designed around high volume , low cost , low quality paint work. It’s designed for the person who just wants something cheap and doesn’t really need a high quality paint job.

My sister had her car painted 2 different times Maaco paint... it peeled off in like a year or two each time. I have the same car 2 years newer and have never done anything but detail it regularly and no issues, just finally started to oxidize after 20 years on OEM pain, so I wrapped those panels
