It's frikkin' cold here now. 7degrees, don't know what the windchill is. It's been snowing for the last 4 or 5 days. It's supposed to hit the upper 20's Fri. and Sat. I'm kinda hoping it gets the deer moving to feed. I'll probably sit in a pop-up blind for protection from the wind!

tough luck man, I've actually really started to like the neck shot. No chance of ruining a shoulder and in my experience they drop immediately. although that is with either a shotgun slug or a broadhead, with rifle I still go with the heart/lungs. The three deer I've taken in the neck have all gone about 10 yards.

i hate loosing deer. lost one earlier this season with my bow. followed the blood for about 100 yards then the trail just went cold. i always feel terrible about that stuff. my roommate always tries to shoot out the shoulder joint with his muzz and rifle so even if they dont die right away they cant go anywhere and he gets a second shot. im a fan of the armpit shot because i use the front legs for burger meat. i always thought there was too much non vital area in the neck. but you live and learn. go out and getcha another!

damn man that sucks but if you hunt long enough you will loose an animal it is part of the game. i will say i have seen to many neck shots go bad for me to use one but everyone has to make up there own mind i am not going to tell you not to. sorry you lost her i would get back out there and hope she lived to walk back under my stand.

20 yards? and you shot it in the neck? why not the lungs?

first off. awesome job getting into range and even seeing a deer. i am again deer-less this year. whatever.

but using a rifle seem downright surgical in precision. i have never lost a deer with a rifle shot. i go for the high precentage shot of a nice lung explosion. shuts them off.

good luck. no scavenger birds floating around?

when they're that close i go for the head/neck shot in order to keep from messing up the meat too bad. other than outright missing, this is the first time ive lost a deer with a rifle, hopefully it'll be the last. no buzzards as of yet.

\didnt think about that..good point. a 7mm-08 at 20 yards, any rifle would be destroy some good meat.

    OP:

I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to see the problem. Your rifle is sighted in for something like 100-200 yards, isnt it? I am guessing 100 yards because that seems to be the standard for most hunters.

You missed a 20 yard neck shot because you forgot to take the range in to account. You probably had a perfect sight picture on the spine, but if you were sighted in for 100 and shooting at 20, the bullet would be impacting 3-5 inches low....right in to the trachea. And then you get your gurgling noises, etc.

I don't understand what you're saying. Why wouldn't it work like that? What about 20 and 100 yards?

On a scoped rifle, the scope is sitting roughly 2-3 inches above the bore line. Put another way, the the bullet is starting 2-3 inches below the optical plane. If the OP is sighted in at 100 yards, the bullet then has to rise those 2-3 inches to hit dead-on @ 100. Maintain that zero, but decrease the distance by 80 yards and the bullet is striking 2-3 inches below the line of sight. It's basic geometry.

*the image is for a caliber different than the OP, but serves the purpose of illustrating what I am getting at.

My uncle killed a buck a few years ago and while we were skinning it we found a large knot on its front shoulder. Cut it open and an old broadhead fell out. Friggin nasty.

Really, tough guy? Instead of explaining your statement or even answering my question, you decided to go full-retard and "name-drop" your "Captain of the National F-Class team" buddy try to call me out? By implying that I would go to the trouble of lying to strangers about my shooting ability? C'mon, bro. You never go full-retard. :jerkoff:

Back to the point. You said "it doesn't work like that....20 and 100 yards." I am asking you what you meant by that. Are you just saying there is no real difference between the point of impact at 20 yards, vs that at 100 yards? When crafting your witty retort, try to string a few words together in to a complete sentence. Give punctuation a go.

have you two considered the variable humidity? how about air pressure. a head wind could have affected the bullet rise/drop. and air temperature! :poking:

He said he has a 7mm-08 and here is a trajectory chart. If he sighted his rifle in at 100 yards he is appx. -.7" at 25 yards. Sighted in at 150 yards he is appx. -.5" at 25 yards. Sighted in at 200 yards he is appx. -.2" at 25 yards.

I used Federal 2010 ballistic chart to see the numbers at 25 yards.
