Both my brother and me bought toyota's back in 84...he got the 4runner and i got the 4wd pickup. I'll agree his 4runner was solid driving it, and appeared put together much nicer. They were built in japan.

Bought a f150. Figured if I'm going to have a truck that's not reliable I might as well have one thats bigger, faster and stronger.

congrats, hopefully the quality holds up. I have a newer 5.0 mustang, I hope it holds up over time, its already had some warranty work with only 18k miles. Lets hope our Fords hang in there. I heard that 2.7 really rips...

I too have noticed a fair number of them. Ugly but I am sure they are a good truck.

I don’t think those are good comparisons because those vehicles are exclusively manufactured in Japan.

Not sure why anyone would think that there is a difference in quality. I will say that based on the american auto industry, I would have less trust in american made than other made. Having said that If you base the decision on the awards given to each plant, then Mexico wins. JD Power gave the Mexico plant a gold in overall quality and in the same year the San Antonio plant got silver. But since most parts are probably made in the same places for both, I doubt there is any difference. But if you want to base off of independent awards then Mexico wins

Today's manufacturing plants are made to meet stringent International ISO guidelines and being Toyota they also have to meet additional standards above and beyond what is required and mandated by Toyota. So where it is made and questioning if its made better somewhere else is a literally a mute point.
Come to mind for example Anheuser Busch in China brews to a higher standard than the USA and has won best brewery of Anheuser Busch several years in a row.
Yes it's beer but none the less one of many critical sectors that reflect overall global quality standards.

In Bold; Now that is a pretty cool piece of trivia if true. China has the ability to make top of the line products. Mostly, they choose not to in favor of high output, low quality, high profit sales. They cut costs with lower quality materials, lower heat treating standards, etc. They will sell you 304 stainless steel, and tell you it is 316L steel. IF you do not verify everything they do, you will lose, because in general they have a zero moral compass. As steel suppliers, you had better get yourself a metal analyzer and check every single batch of steel you purchase from China. Companies like Toyota succeed because of their high internal QC.

There are not enough metrics to determine if a truck is built any better in Mexico or Texas from a bunch of guys on a forum chiming in that their truck was built in Texas and has no problems.

I like that my Tacoma was made in Texas so when my "Buy 'Merikan" dad gives me shit about driving a Japanese truck I can point out that his Dodge was made in Mexico and his Chevy was made in Canada, while my "Jap crap" was built in the U.S of A!

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japan's Toyota Motor Corp 7203. T will build additional capacity at its auto plant in China's Guangzhou, a company source said, in addition to beefing up production at a factory in Tianjin city by 120,000 vehicles a year. ... Toyota's production capacity in China is 1.16 million vehicles a year.

After nearly a year with the new tacoma i can't really find much fault...it performs flawless, and is awesome in 4wd compared to the gen1 tundra i came from. Yeah, the tacoma has developed a weird squeak that comes and goes depending on the weather, but as they say it builds character in the truck....otherwise it doesn't get much better.

Bought my 2017 Off Road brand new in April 2017. Texas build. 63K miles to date. So far, the *only* thing that has "malfunctioned" are the crappy OEM Goodyear Wrangler Kevlar tires. Obvious not a Toyota issue. Not the slightest problem of any kind, other than those tires.

Keep in mind that the Tacoma was designed specfically as a North American product offering, while the 4Runner was designed a Japanese market product - a market that is well-known to have significantly higher standards for quality. ('traditional' American car quality standards would not acceptable...)

This is a key consideration for tolerances, soundproofing, tech features, etc. offered in a vehicle in the various market. basically, the Tacoma and other Toyota cars is built for the US market (good but not the best..) - the 4Runner (and Land Cruiser) are more to Japanese quality standards. (And you pay for this.)

Simply building a Tacoma in Japan (or Germany) would not result in a better Tacoma - at it would be built with the same parts and the same standards... To build a better Tacoma, you would need to do a bit of re-design...

Similarly, Lexus brand finishes and features are targeting a different market than the Toyota brand...

Simply - Toyota knows its market very well... Is there an issue with where the plants are located? From this thread, it seems not. (maybe Baja is better?)

Is the TX plant better than Baja because of the employees who work there? (This is what the arguments seem to point at...). I would argue that it is likely that the average profile of the workers employed at the two plants is VERY similar...

Perhaps the solution to ddress the concern... is to have Toyota make a LEXUS "LT100". (This being the Lexus version of the Tacoma). Hmmm. Cushier -wood accents?, More tech?, maybe the AWD / 4x4 system from the LandCruiser? A factory Front locker?

I thnk the Tacoma is fine as it is... it is a truck. The LEXUS Tacoma would cost - how much more?

The typical Tacoma buyer in the US would not be willing to pay that premium... therefore Tayota would revert to the status quo...
