    Anyone run them?

on German cars I've used products from
    -Dimple Motor Oil Magnets
    -MetalNerd
    and they seemed well-built
luckily they offered products for my platform at the time,
but I'll check to see if they also make them for the Tacoma 1GR-FE; they might not.

is it? I didn't know that.
I'll have to take a closer look at mine next oil change because I don't think it is...
    unless it's been replaced before

From what I've seen the front and rear diffs come with magnetic drain plugs from factory. The transfer case does not. Only way to find out for sure is to do a fluid change and check.

I bough an aftermarket magnetic transfer case plug. Trail Gear was selling them.

Just put a strong neodymium magnet on the existing drain plug.

Probably not going to see anything on a magnet in a mostly non-ferrous engine.

You'd be surprised. I run them (Gold brand) in all my vehicles and every oil change has some ferrous gunk on them.

The diffs get a magnetic plug because they don’t have any form of filter, where since your engine oil actually has a filter there’s no need for any secondary form of ‘filtering’, that’s why it’s not magnetic from the factory like the diffs, don’t see any reason why not though, as long as the magnet won’t come dislodged from the plug.

Whatever makes your sticker peck out.

I used one for a few years when I was young and dumb. And didn't know any better.

The oil filter captures out everything down into the micron range of particles. So if you are still getting crap on the magnet you have bigger issues, the filter isn't working or is bypassing and you are preventing the oil filter from doing its job.

Magnet not needed or desired for the engine oil.

So I suppose that's true for the five current vehicles that have magnetic plugs, plus the dozen or so previous ones that all exhibit the same evidence? All of them have/had "bigger issues?" That's one hell of a coincidence.

It isn't that the magnet won't pick up debris.... It just happens to capture it before it goes through the filter.

The magnet isn't helping anything. Let the filter do it's job.

    Think about it...

We just disagree. The magnet doesn't hurt or help...

So what size are ferrous particles Jimmy? Larger than the filtering capability of the filter? Smaller? What's your source?

This is going to go the way of most threads you're involved in. You're right, everyone else is wrong. If I had the time and inclination I'd drop dozens of links to articles proving you wrong, but it won't help. Just not worth it.

The good thing about a magnetic drain plug is that it may give you advance warning of a potential problem when you change your oil, other than that if your oil filter is doing its job a magnet isn't really adding any benefit as far as keeping the oil cleaner.

I wonder why the tranny pan has magnets. It has a filter.

1:Transmissions have much more ferrous metals in them.
2:You aren't changing the fluid very often like engine oil.
3:Transmission filters are more really fine screens than they are filters, they catch the bigger stuff but they don't filter the tiny particles out so the magnets are there to pull the fine metal particles out of the oil.

    Relax dude.

I'm not arguing with you. Just trying to make a few points:

    1. The oil filter is filtering out down in the micron range.
    2. The oil filter will clean your oil of any harmful particles and doesn't require any help.

Oil contaminates are in various sizes. Most is just combustion by products.

Oil filters trap contaminates in the micron range. Any particles that get by the filter are so tiny they are practically harmless.

I have many sources. Mainly Automotive manufacturing industry more that 25 years.

I am opinionated? Yes I am, as are you.

"I'm right and everybody else is wrong" I don't know where that comes from.

Sorry my post history annoys you. Feel free to ignore my post if you wish and I'll try and remember to give you the same courtesy.

Magnetic oil drain plugs are not a hill to die on.

    Bye ;)

    am running manual gearbox

cleaning AT magnets is a part of their service. Any time you service an auto trans by dropping the pan to put new fluid, filter, and wipe the pan clean, the magnets are also supposed to be removed for wiping and spraying off with brake cleaner.
