Magnetic Drain Plugs

I was thinking, why could I not simply take an appropriate size Neodymium magnet and place it directly on the plugs internal end? The magnetic force should hold it there solidly. I ask because I’m puzzled why we would need to purchase one that already has a magnet installed.

The Neodymium magnets are stronger and I was thinking I could maximize the size I could locate on the end of the plug to provide the largest surface area and pulling force. I don’t think we would need to bond the magnet to the plug or recess install it either. Am I missing something?

I suspect the size that would fit would provide approximately 10-15 lbs of pulling force ensuring anything in the differentials would wind up on the magnet.

I'd would be a little nervous about not having the magnet bonded to the bolt due to on/off road vibrations over the course of time between fluid changes, that's just me.

 

Wouldn't bother me any.
I'd imagine if you hit something so hard as to jar the magnet loose, you'd be looking for a new truck and not the magnet.

 

Just stick it to the bottom of the pan.

 

Yep, I would guess it to be virtually impossible to get a 10+ LB pull strength Neodymium magnet to move from the end of that drain plug. I’ll do this and report back. I’m going to go to Toyota today to purchase two new front and rear differential drain plugs. I’ll then measure the diameter at the end of each plug so I can order the magnets.

I’m doing this for the differentials. I use a Fumoto for the oil.

aren't those drain plugs for diffs already magnetized from factory?

 

Would the magnet want to stick to the pan as you are installing it ? Then upon removal it could grab the pan and come away from the plug. How would you remove it at that point. Maybe add some oil resistant epoxy if there is such a material.

 

Thats what I thought too. Im changing front and rear diff fluid soon and got these just so I could change out the socket head bolts on the front diff. I read somewhere online that these will fit but dont have first hand knowledge yet.

Yes. I was thinking of supercharging them with Neodymium’s.

 

After perusing this site for information I’m going to swap out the standard plugs with the Toyota derivative with a larger magnet.

this looks pretty long, you sure it won't protrude inside too much and collide with gears and other moving parts?

 

I will be able to tell when I install. Between the plug itself and a gauge I’m confident in being able to determine acceptability.

 

It's got a bonded magnet and it's low profile.
