too early to really tell but based on Gen2 product by Magnuson I'd suspect they will be fine for 99.9% of the user applications - Give them enough time that Gen3 is replaced by Gen4 and they may even be less pricey!

265/75R16 Wildpeak AT3W, Softopper, Kicker speakers, shift knob, Ventvisors, Tint, Husky Weatherbeaters, Hondo Garage radio knobs. The to do list: Bilstein 6112/5160, 3 leaf add-a-leafs, lights, alu skid, PRP seat covers...
I got questions. I am interested in this but not for a few years down the road. I came from a 5.7L Tundra and I currently have a 2017 TRD OR DCLB that has dodged every recall, never had shifting issues, I have had no mechanical/functional issues with anything on this truck. Best Toyota I've had for the last 53k miles. My AWD 2.4L Matrix had some minor stuff over 99k miles, and my Tundra had all the door lock actuators replaced, and some other minor things in under 30k miles. But this Tacoma has needed nothing and hasn't had any TW plagues. I was rather satisfied with how the truck runs compared to the Tundra given the obvious differences. I want a supercharger for this truck.

The performance of this engine isn't that bad. Nothing gets low end torque except diesels because of the EPA regulations. They need these engines to sip fuel at low rpm and still give you the power up top. Look at the these engines and peak torque rpm. Considering this is a small displacement non-boosted engine its not really an outlier at all. Would we all like it better? YES.

    upload_2020-9-10_21-42-59.jpg

Max torque on the 3.5 compared to the 4.0 is 200 rpm different.
Max torque on the 3.5 is less than 1000 rpm from anything non-diesel being built right now. Some V8's even are similar rpm like the 5.0 hits max torque 100 rpm less.
Max torque on the 3.5 is only 600 rpm higher than the only big block push-rod gas V8 (Ford 7.3) being built right now. 600 rpm.
Our 3.5/4.0 Tacoma's have more HP than the 1990 454.

There are other factors obviously, but basic gear ratio run down stock 3.5 Tacoma isn't much different applied torque than a 5.7L HEMI Ram 1500. I have the heaviest stock configuration of a Taco and my truck is still 1000+ lbs lighter. A Maggie on a stock 3.5 Tacoma should make these trucks run like a small block half ton on a diet and if they can get the peak torque under 4000 rpm the torque will be at max lower than every V8 being built right now except the Tundra (like they did with the 4.0's).

    upload_2020-9-10_21-56-7.jpg

I'm not disagreeing. Who doesn't like low end torque. I'm just saying looking around the room, the performance of the 3.5 isn't much different than the 4.0 or other truck engines as far as torque curves and whatnot. Its gonna come down to gear ratios and the trans tuning (like what has been said already in this thread).

So I'm here with everyone else waiting for a legit dyno chart and youtube video.

**There are flaws in this. Basic gathering info to put in a chart. I'm not a drivetrain/tuning/engine expert, but neither are most of the people in this forum. This is not to pick a fight with anybody, just general discussion about how the Maggie charger could/should aid the 3.5L trucks.

A properly sized turbo or S/C should keep peak torque at the exact RPM as stock. However, it should raise the entire torque curve to match the stock N/A motor shape. The only thing that should shift a torque curve (to higher or lower RPM) is a change in cam's, intake manifold, etc. Forced induction should increase power everywhere (EDIT - For a DD, not a dyno queen)

Awesome. Depending on actual cost I’ll pay for a before and after dyno if you are willing to do it and post it. Shoot me a PM if interested.

I have stock gears with a MT so 4.30 from factory. Putting 285/70r17’s on next week too. I have the OV tune running 2.0 but that will have to be set back to stock and then use Magnuson tune made with OV VF tuner.... also have the AFE catted downpipes and y pipe on order.

I would ASSUME that they can tailor the tune to the downpipes and y-pipe. It make take some development on their side but I'm expecting several tune revisions to be released by them.

I’ll bet a simple go fund me would net you enough to cover a chunk of costs. Just cap it at $200. I’m sure many in here would pay $10-20 to help the effort.

I figured the Magnuson Tune (Mat's VFTuner software / flash) would flash over (over-write / replace) the OVTune 2.0 and you would not have to flash back to stock first. ??? I have OVtune 2.0 on my AT and that is the one thing about the Magnuson mod that bothers me the most - I don't want to lose the shifting logic Mat fixed from the drunk monkey shifting Toyota sold us AT owners. ??

That’s a tough one. Magnuson may have some IP they want to retain, so are likely to have locked tunes. Their warranty also might require use of their tune only.

You might be able to give them a copy of your vft, and see if they can add their edits on top of it?

Good thought - I wish I knew someone at Magnuson I could talk to about this and see. They should be able to use the vft Mat created for AT 4.88's and stock tires and come up with a killer match for the SC addition. Know anyone ? Hello Magnuson ! Anyone listening ?

I know someone with the Mag-charger and the tune is indeed locked.

As for the shifting logic, I'll have to talk with him further about how the truck's doing but I wouldn't be surprised if Magnuson used a 2.0 map as their starting point for developing their tune.

i think the shifting logic was all in response to the output of the engine . If you have 30% more power across the board then it may not matter.

Just talked with him. For the rest of this comment, keep in mind that he's got a ton of armor, a lift, and 35's. Very heavy truck.

He says the tune has gearlock and that he can cruise at 98mph in 5th. Says 5th and 6th gear are usable now and that he assumes if he had less armor and/or smaller or stock tires, that it'd cruise in 6th just fine. And that since he's AT, the stock gearing isn't great either. Said 5th was super smooth at that speed though.
