I think you have it backwards, Magnusson made the TRD SC's for Toyota, the intakes are not made by Toyota either along with all of the other " TRD accessories " it is all made by existing manufacturers. It is called private label manufacturing. You are on the right path about CARB certification, Toyota puts up the blackmail cash to get the CARB cert for accessories they want to sell. More and more manufacturers are giving the middle finger to CARB and are no longer making CA legal parts because it can cost them $50-100k in fees to get something certified and they will never make their money back on it.

Yup, and the 3.4l and 4.0l superchargers were no longer CARB compliant after TRD bailed on Magnuson. Magnuson lost CARB compliance on those and had to pay to get it back because TRD was the one that paid for it in the first place. Which is why used TRD superchargers for the 3.4l and 4.0l were such hot ticket items on the market after TRD stopped branding them, because you could no longer buy a new one in CA and have it be CARB compliant. Only if it was a used one stamped with the TRD logo (and came with the CARB sticker.....smog shops are a-holes about that).

The 3.4l and 4.0l Magnuson branded superchargers finally just became CARB compliant last year. Which is why I'm afraid that if they do develop a 3.5l blower for the 3rd gens, it will be awhile (maybe even years like in the past) before they become "street legal" for CA buyers. Unless Magnuson puts out the big bucks up front for it.

The point about the intakes was exactly what was pointed out. Toyota put up the $ and the work for the executive order.
No one else will because of the cost and they can't validate a ROI.

All of the pre-work had already been done for the 3.4 4.0 and 5.7 superchargers, and they were already certified once. It was basically a transfer, and issuance of a new CARB number to a company that was already producing the product on behalf of another company.

Much easier than developing a new product, and getting it certified.

Pointing out that none of their other independently produced superchargers for other brands have CARB certification, is a clear indicator that any forthcoming Toyota superchargers will also not have have certification.

I don't doubt it, if it took them that long just to "transfer" TRD's CARB compliance over to Magnuson then who knows how long it would take for them to get it themselves on a new product (if they even go through the trouble).

All about that $$$. I bet Magnuson could make something that turned your truck into a smog-emitting, instant-respiratory death machine and CA wouldn't actually care so long as they paid the fees to make it CARB.

The very best hope would be that with the development of a fr-s/brz/86 kit, a dual VVT 4.0 kit, and confirmation of an upcoming 3.5L kit is that TRD is getting back in the supercharger game. But I doubt that is the case

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

They haven't even released the 5th gen 4runner superchagers to the public, and they announced it earlier this year. I can't see them getting the 3.5l supercharger out early next year. mayyybbbbee 2019

Time will tell. They showed off that 4Runner in July, i could be wrong but i'm not optimistic with what i've seen so far.

As you can see they stated they built it in on a post from instagram in July.

5th gen 4Runner blower is available to the public in December according to Magnuson when I talked to them yesterday at their booth in the Lucas Oil Off Road Expo. 336 whp and 306 ft-lbs at the wheels with only 6 psi, CARB legal and 91 Octane pump gas. What's not to like?

BTW the 3rd gen Tacoma blower has been in the works for some times according to Mangnuson when I talked to them yesterday. Sometimes next year is what I've been told. Summer or fall is the ball park time frame.

5th gen 4runner has been out since 2010, been a long development for that. Given that our atkinson/otto engine is more complex I would say don't expect them to reach their eta 2018. They need time to work the kinks out, at least so we get a good product.

Nope not true at all, Magnuson had the supercharger for the 5th gen 4Runner since the dual VVT-I engine emerge. Go ahead and Google around and you'll see the prototype pics of it. I confirmed it with them this weekend when I talked to them. They had it for the longest of time but was put on the back burner due to other projects.

BTW according to them the 3.5 with the Atkinson/Otto cycle isn't hard to make power or get the kinks out. I rather trust their words then what's said on these forums.
