There IS a mod to use the locker anytime including 2 wheel drive. The mod you have in mind for ATrac is already in place. When in 4H you automatically have TRAC active wich is the same thing as ATrac, its just not as aggressive. This is one area IMO where Toyota dropped the ball, the mass confusion and misunderstanding of the 4WD systems could have been simplified.

Ok I have a TRD OR and as far as A-Trac being useless I guess your either not using it correctly or never used it. I have had the chance to use it in the woods of New Hampshire and with the rocky terrian it works period. Trying climbing wet slick rock with a coating of mud it just plain works like a locked diff but you still have the ability to turn without issue. The rear locker is weak???!!!! not sure where you got this info but without that rear locker I would of never made it home in one of the worst winter blizzards of the Northeast, I got myself unstuck and also pulled my nieghbors fullsize chevy out of a snow bank all due to 4Lo and locked rear end. I have had three vehicles that have had OEM lockers and they work great, but if you never use them why pay extra for them. The Down-Hill assist is also a great feature but a bit noisey, all in all it also works great in slippery slopes. Again to OP if you see 99% street go with the TRD Sport but any off pavement use at all and having the TRD OR with its fancy off road features are great. And I am not talking crazy rock crawling either. I gave two examples of the uses and one technically was on road in the severe winter. I am a fan of having tools to make a vehicle better in a severe condition and A-Trac, Locker, and DH assist are great tools when used correctly. Choose wisely OP:)

It's not new, it's not Mexico
Toyota.com lists all the package content for the SR5, TRD Off Road & TRD Sport packages. Yahoo! Autos website lists the package contents and gives list & invoice prices too. The dealer's website will have an inventory search so you can see what's in stock. Best of luck with your purchase. :)

Would it be inessential to have 4x4 in the TRD o/r package? I was thinking the 4x2 pre-runner TRD o/r package would be fine but I believe that I lose a lot of stuff as well electronically. Opinion?

The locking rear differential in a Prerunner Off Road package would be useful in some situations, but it's no substitute for real four wheel drive off road or in snow. You'll get arguments ether way on this site. If I was an off-roader I would get a 4 X 4 access cab with just the convenience package then add after market accessories that I needed.

I had a TRD per runner with the locker. I loved that truck. I pulled fords out of the mud with my locker no problem. That is what made my mind up when I purchased my 2013. I went with the off road package in 4x4.

Also if you ever decide to sell it, it will be quicker and easier to sell, and you'll get more money for 4x4.

the rear locking diff is weak vs the standard rear diff, yes the locker is awesome with traction, but it's also slightly more prone to catastrophic failure.

the elocker rear end has a 8.0 ring gear and the sr5 and sport models have the 8.4 ring gear.

the failure doesn't happen to often, but it has happened, TW member monkeyproof has blown his rear diff 2 or 3 times.

I'm getting tired of covering this. The ring gears are the same size.
