Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have a question…. I took my 2017 Tacoma 2wd to the dealer today for its 40,000 mile service. They told me my main rear seal needed to be replaced and that they have to pull the transmission out to do the job and it would take 3 days.
I take very good care of my truck and am wondering how this happened if this is normal and if you actually have to take the transmission out to do this. Thank God im still covered by the warranty, but am also wondering if this will likely give me more problems down the road?
I appreciate any light you guys can shed on this matter
    Thank You

Don't think you did anything. Probably just a seal with a defect in it. First time I've heard of something like this.

Probably just a defective seal. Rear main seals do need replacing eventually but they should last 100k miles or more normally

If the rear main seal is leaking you should see a drop in oil level and wetness on truck below and parking spot.

I could do it in 4-5 hours lol. Those transmissions are super easy to remove.

You do have to remove the transmission, it's sandwiched between the torque converter , flex plate and crank shaft.

It's kinda a bit job, but not 3 days big. That's silly.

I'd check to see if you really do have a bad seal. Maybe get a second opinion from an independent shop.

Is there oil stains on the ground where you regularly park? Do you need to add oil between oil changes? If no, I bet you don't have a bad seal.

There will definitely be oil on the ground if the seal is bad.
