Its definitly got its pros and cons... trade offs for weight, bed usage, and having 200lbs+/- up that high is a gamble on off camber trails/areas..

been looking at the 18" Max Modular rack.. as it allows me to retain my soft tonneau cover so it can remain somewhat dry for storage boxes, and recovery gear. it puts the RTT just 2-5" above the roof line.. but going with the 18" rack allows me to eventually put on a wraptor 270 awning, or simple ARB awning should I choose to later (I'm 6'2") with a 2" lift (later on), and 33" tires (eventually) it'll be just about perfect for my height, with some wiggle room.. and I believe it only weighs around 70lbs...

the RTT- been looking at the ARB simpson III with annex for the cost, name and build quality, and included annex, that i've seen on reviews of it.. it seems an OK fit for me as a 2-3person tent.. and for $1400-ish it seems to fit the bill. only concern I have is making sure to clean it regularly, and dry sufficiently before storage (mold).. dunno if there is a spray, or mold pre-treatment that can be done to it... have to research some more.. it weighs around 125lbs.. so with the rack its just over 200lbs..

I eventually plan to take my vacations with the truck, driving cross country see some sights, visit historical monuments, and do a couple trails out west.. visit family in Texas, Louisianna, Florida.. etc... maybe someday on a LONG vacation make a drive up into Fairbanks Alaska..

I think the 18" tall version of that rack will be at or above the roof line of the cab. So the full height of the RTT will be up in the wind. Im considering the 14" version right now which is still kinda tall. But I really like having clear view through all 3 of my mirrors

I looked it up.. someone on here posted the top of the bed to the edge of the roof (not the center where the shark fin is, but near the doors) is 20" so 18" will be just under it.. leaving about 8-10 inches of the RTT exposed above the roof line (the ARB rtt specs say its 12" height folded (im fairly sure that doesnt include the ladder height....) oh and I was wrong on the weight.. its 154lbs.. the KBvoodoo max modular website is'nt working/or down from here (work)..

they do offer a 14" or 10" rack... and then there is the 6" high-rise rail system that allows me to keep the tonneau as well for $339 with tamper resistant screws/wrench..

My CBI rack is 14.5 from the top of the bed, this puts the top of the rack just above the rear window and allows you to look out through the rear window.

Ok.... I posted that information because it was a current topic on this form and I had information with pictures. (Do with that information, what you want to it wasn't just for your eyes as I also know SR-71a is looking for a rack and figured other people might want to know/see

BTW I just measured the top of my bed rails to the top of my roof line which is just about 20"

Did they change it that much? I've read some conflicting info on here about that. But either way, it should be close

just measured mine.. its a solid 20" from the rear bed to the base of the shark fin.. so still have 2 inches below the roofline, leaving visibility out the rear window with the 18", and giving the tent, and bed rack the height to accomodate an awning int he future. Ideally i would like the RTT lower say at a 14" height to have it below the roof line.. and maybe make some sort of adjustable height standoffs for the awning???

10+12= 22 inches meaning 2 inches of the RTT above the roof line
14+12= 26 inches meaning 6 inches of the RTT above the roof line.
18+12= 30 inches meaning 10 inches of the RTT above the roof line...

the 10 inch I would think would be too low, and complicate any type of awning later on.. 14 would need some modification (extended awning mount brackets) but with a lift and tires would accomodate an awning.. 18 could simply bolt on and function as is...

i would imagine if I did order the 18" and I found the rack to be too high I could always cut down the uprights to lower it..

the one thing I did not account for was the tonneau brackets adding about 2 inches of height..

So I didn't realize there was that much of a difference between a 3rd gen and 2nd gen in cab height but the top of my back bed rail to the roof can be seen here and that doesn't sound much different then yours, NOTE: The center bed rail is about maybe 1/2 lower then side bed rails on 2nd gen.
    upload_2019-4-11_20-52-59.jpg

Also one measurement that you might not have included is the rails you mount the bottom of the RTT in order to mount it to the rack, this rail it about an inch on a CVT tent, not sure about other RTTs

Made it with plenty of time to spare; got home yesterday afternoon and the driveway was bare again, no salt required. GF was pissed, lol. I asked her what was for dinner on Saturday and she said Mac & Cheese from a box, which she knows I hate

It could be 1/2" rail but I personally can't tell from that video, here is a snapshot of my CVTs rail

BTW that is a good video for installation, I watched it when I got my CVT.

    Honestly she doesn't really cook...
Usually I do all of it. She helps with dinner sometimes but most of the time I'm running the kitchen. And since she's gone gluten-free it means that a simple 'dump some noodles in a pot and heat up some sauce' meal is out, so I'm curious to see what she makes. I might be getting rice & bean burritos for the weekend

yeah hard to tell, and if they changed their rails at all... but from the videos and the reviews i've seen of the ARB simpson III its a pretty stable platform only question i have is if my height isnt enough for the ladder to lock in place... is it adjustable at all, or will i have to mod the ladder?? I think next paycheck I'll be pulling the trigger on a 14" max modular, and see about sourcing the tent... we shall see..
