The Maine Woods on youtube has been fixing up one of the St. John cabins and does a nice shout-out to him at the end.

Haven't seen the video, but I think I know who & where you're talking about. Was there a few months ago and it was obvious work was being done on the cabin. Nice to see someone is doing up keep of those old cabins. If I knew the guy personally Id offer to lend a hand

What hunting seasons are open in Maine? I'm camped out near Baxter/north woods and hearing frequent strings of fire, several with 4-5 shots.

I hope it's a bird season, otherwise someone should teach these hunters how to shoot straight.

There is always an open season in Maine. Depending on where you are and what you are doing, rifle deer (~November) will have the most impact on your outdoor activities. But August - December, something is in season for big game and spring for Turkey. Hunting season should never deter you from spending time outside, but it may impact campsite availability, traffic, and if you want to go walking through the woods dressed like a deer/bear/moose. In Maine, you can generally shoot unless an area has special local restrictions or if the land is posted.

I pulled my wheels off and checked mine the other night after seeing him on the side of the road. I am guessing that is was a uniball failure and he didn't seem like someone who greases it regularly? Tough luck though, that is the last thing you'd expect

I've been looking for a camp/property up there and have had 2 things come up in the past 10 years worth buying. The first one - I still have heartbreak over, owned frontage on the Big Black, the second one had huge liability issues including an illegal septic and fuel storage containers illegally placed.

I hear you, I have looked a bit but then thought I really don't have enough time to spend at one. On our trip several weeks we stumbled on what looked like an old sporting camp set up that some individual must have bought or inherited when the leases were dissolved. Several small cabins along with a larger one, the whole place was in very bad shape with a little recent work done here and there, sad really.
I just got back from a camping trip up off the Pinkham road with my adult kids, was a great time! We were leaving just as the moose hunters were invading. Nothing against the moose hunters but when a group from Connecticut drove into the middle of our camp and wanted to where the best place to camp was and if we had seen any moose, I told him the absolute best place to camp was 10 or so miles up the road and I had not seen a single moose. Read that as get the f out my camp and do your research, oh and I had seen 4 moose the day before. The line at Six MileDSC_0762.jpg Checkpoint when we left was a quarter mile long heading in!
