    That seems backwards :D

Especially the ones you get at the beach. Those suckers feel like you're getting bit by a honey badger.

Skidooman! You can’t go wrong with Mount Desert Island and Acadia Park! Definitely should be the main focus of the trip if you’ve never visited Maine before, it will check off ALL your boxes, so much to do- Go fishing, whale watching, biking, hiking so much stuff to do & see! I always go up the weekend before July 4th and it’s actually quiet, still waking up from winter hibernation up there, late summer and Fall is the busiest crazy time. "If you don't like the weather, wait one minute." I think that's our oldest cliche, but it's true. Every two years my wife has this “dog” gathering thing up there and people from out of state are always blown away by the rugged beauty of the place. Bar Harbor is the hot touristy spot for shopping and that’s where traffic can be bad, but South West Harbor (other side of Island) is a better place to base camp imo. stay at this place- http://www.mooringsinn.com/

    hey, you laugh, but...

    http://library.umaine.edu/MaineAES/TechnicalBulletin/tb160.pdf

"Chrysops fuliginosus is a pest of bathers on ocean beaches. It sometimes is necessary to seek shelter from these flies at the height of the flight season.
Some species of horse flies such as Hybomitra illota and H. Epistates also attack humans, and Tabanus Nigrovittatus has been known to drive bathers from the beaches."

Ha, I’m back reading some of the vacation suggestions… don’t mess with any of that shit, especially if your wife wants a semi-chill time. Appalachian Trail?!! Jesus, your wife will divorce you after that. Katatin is impressive, but you see all kinds of mountains where your from, big deal. I’m telling you Mount Desert Island will be one of the best chill vacations of your life! I have traveled all over the world and lived in Maine all my life and MDI is truly a magical unique place… it has everything you need to see and do to get the “Maine experience” …except swimming in the ocean, that will freeze your nuts off, but deep sea fishing- O’Yeah! But besides that, It has tons of nooks and grannies to avoid people. Go sailing on a tall ship, eat lobster pancakes, listen to the loon’s call, bark at seals, go on the Beehive hike & drink local beer! Biking all around on the carriage roads is really fun too. Vacation’s are about maximizing fun time, MDI is where it’s at. Driving up the coast is not really that nice here, honestly. Portland you'll be bored after a hour. The coast from Rockland to MDI should be the main focus area to visit.

They will put a welt on you like a cyst.
I work on a couple of charter trucks in the shop.
Not really interested in deep sea but I know they go after almost anything that's out there.
Your going to have to leave the Portland area like others have said but there is soooooooo much outdoor stuff to find.

    yes please
I agree with driving up Rt. 1 from Portland to Bar Harbor, stopping to eat, drink, shop, and explore--lot's to do/see depending on your pace and range.
If'n Freeport, hit Azure Cafe for a great lunch, or an even better romantic dinner, and stop by Maine Beer Co., for some tastings and bottles for your cooler. Now, if I can only convince them to do growlers...

Maine guides are licensed so they all know what they are doing if you are some where near where you might want to fish stop in a tackle shop and ask about a local guide. There is some strange dealings with salt water fishing right now and I havn't been keeping up but I still think you can salt water fish with out a license but for fresh water you'll need an out of state license. The 4th will be a zoo, Maine's summers usually are called 3 months of bad sledding but the weather is generally nice it can be really hot but that does not last long and the nights are cool. The latter you come in the season the lower the bug population and they can be unbearable early on.

There is another option all though I too agree with Arcadia and that's Moose Head lake if you want to be away from it all. My friends camp is near North East Carry it is just about 45 miles off the hard top road. The fishing and canoeing is to die for if that is what you are looking for. Maine is big it is about a 5-6 hour drive from Portland to Fort Kent so keep that in mind when you plan your trip.

Ok, nailing down dates. What times are ideal? Early-mid July, or mid to late August is really all we have open.

My family's got a camp at Nort East Carry, beautiful up there!! All kinds of hiking, fishing, and canoing/kayaking. That area though, no 4-wheelers if that was something you'd want to rent.
