I have recently purchased an 2006 Tacoma access cab w/4x4. It has 240k miles but was a great deal. I has a rough country lift and oversized tires. I am wondering with a truck with that mileage what are some maintenance items I need to keep a check on or maybe look at replacing. Also I have never owned a truck with a lift on it and am wondering what kind of maintenance that requires.

Usually with lifts and big tires you'll see CV axles tear and lose all the grease. The steering rack is usually leaking by now (oil in the boots). Upper ball joints can be worn out dependent on how you drive it.

The frame is good. I had my local mechanic put it up on the rack and he checked it for me.

The main thing I have noticed is that there is a sound almost under the driver seat I can hear when I am coasting. It only happens in 2wd but goes away in 4wd. It sounds almost like a chain moving or something.

Is that an expensive fix. It didn't have the noise when I bought it, but literally just started I think yesterday. It is my 2nd car. Is that something I should wait to drive till I get it fixed?

Do you have the maintenance records? Else I would start changing all fluids.

Its not a simple job, but if your going to do ball joints shocks and other maintenance, then do it while that's all out or you'll pay twice.

Also have a look at the engine mounts... that year was known for having bad ones.

You seem very knowledgeable about these trucks. I am really interested in restoring this to a good running truck. Is there anyway you can message me a detailed list of items you would either replace or check for wear and tear.

Replace all fluids and filters, get the needle bearing and ball joints fixed asap before driving it to far. Check the motor mounts on both passenger and driver. Check belts and hoses including brake lines hard and soft.

Thank you so much! I have read somethings on this forum about how bad rough country lifts are. Should I replace it with a new lift?

    A thing or two...
Replace the spark plugs, as well, and grease all the driveshaft zerks. Flushing the coolant and brake systems wouldn't be a bad idea either.
