Maintenance Interval For Front Differential and Transfer Case?

Been all over my maintenance guide that came with the truck. Unable to find any info on mileage between gear oil changes for the front diff and xfer case (Rear diff is due every 30K because of the LSD feature). The only reference to gear oil in front diff and xfer case is to "inspect" the oil. Nothing about a change. How do you gents with 4 x 4's handle this? Thanks.

 

Seems like the last time I changed out the goop up front, it was still in pristine condition. The rear diff was a completely different story - it stunk to high heaven.

PS: Seems like a pretty covenient document. Where'd you find this?

 

front diff and tcase for me get changed every other time the rear diff does.

I changed rear diff at 30k intervals up till 120k, this most recent change the rear diff and front/tcase came out looking good, so now im going 40k intervals on the rear and 80k on front/tcase.


Also OP. if this is on your 09 you have a standard open diff with a simulated lsd via brakes. 08 was the last year of the mechanical LSD.

 

ND4: Yes, you are right. I have an 09. So does that mean I do not need to change out the lube at every 30K?

 

The biggest thing with the front is to do it soon(er) than later.
It’s a 10mm Allen. It’s known to get stuck and strip.

Before you do anything, break the FILL plug loose.

Then buy one of these, (You can find them at most auto parts stores)

You’ll also want 10mm socket Allen.
Forget using a standard Allen wrench. That’s asking for trouble.

Then get out the hammer, SMMMAAACK!
