Does anyone know the reasons that will cause the Maint Reqd light to come on other than for the 5000mile oil change? Does it come on at other intervals for other oils that need to be changed (diffs, transmission, transfer case, etc.)? My light came on and it was before the scheduled oil change. I do not want to just reset it without addressing the problem (i know how to reset).

    .
At 3000 miles, that is your oil change reminder. I don't think its set up to go 5000 miles betweem oil changes. In Canada, 5000 km between changes, yes.

The maintenance required light comes on in 5000 miles from the last time it was reset, regardless of what type of maintenance procedure (if any) was performed. You can safely reset it now, but keep track of the mileage 'till your next oil change is due, then reset it again after.

Read the manual. That light can be set for different intervals up to 5000 miles.

4500 miles the light will flash for a short time after startup.
5000 miles it comes on solid.

Toyota used to recommend 5000 mile intervals for "severe service" and 7500 miles for "normal service".
That was the OM recommendation on my '03 Tundra.
When they added the maintenance light, on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, they dropped the 7500 mile interval and just put everyone on 5000 whether it needs it or not.

It's stupid, and an example of Toyota's cost-cutting over the last 20 years.

Even the General Motors OLM has some intelligence behind it, calculating not only mileage, but engine/coolant/air temperature, engine RPM, fuel consumption, engine load, etc... In short, if the GM OLM says to change at 4000, you NEED to change at 4000. If it doesn't say to change until 8000, you don't need to change until 8000.

My '06 Duramax would recommend changes anywhere from 8k to 12k. Since I was running synthetic and a premium filter (no Delco/Fram/Supertech shit), I was comfortable following the longer interval.

3000 mile oil changes are not only a waste of money, but a waste of natural resources. Modern vehicles do not need to be changed at 3,000 miles.

Tacomacanada, you must have a US tacoma, the canadian versions don't have a maintenance light.

from my understanding they can be set for different intervals, when you reset them there are those 00000 and I think the less 000 mean more mileage til it goes on

no intervals, when reset, the cpu will start from zero miles and log them for 4500 miles, then blink and come on at 5000 miles.
why the hassle? use mobil 1 15,000 mile oil and not worry about it.

i bought my truck used, and don't have the manual. i will try resetting it, since they changed the oil when I bought it 3 weeks ago.

EDIT - thanks for the info, no more Maint light. Now I just need to find the vehicle manual online.
