"Maintenance Required" at 15K miles?

I bought a 2016 Tacoma Limited at Carmax this last spring. Now, at 15k miles, my display is saying "maintenance required" but it doesn't tell me exactly what maintenance this message refers to. Since my previous Tacoma (a 2005) gave me a similar message when I was due for an oil change, I guessed my current message might be trying to tell me the same thing. Nope, seeing same message. I changed the oil and filter (more challenging in the 2016 than the 2005 model), held the odometer button in while starting the engine (the reset procedure that worked in the 2005 Tacoma) but am still seeing "Maintenance Required." Since the warranty is still in effect, is it possible that the mystery message is telling me a visit to a dealer is mandatory at 15k miles? Something else? I think I still have an OBD reader device; do I need to plug it in to see what maintenance is called for? Maybe it can reset the message, just as it did when a "check engine" alert displayed in the 2005 model. Anybody have this experience or have any suggestions?

I think that it comes on every 5k because there is scheduled maintence at that time. Tire rotation and inspection. I would consult your manual to confirm. There is a reset procedure in the manual if you do you own maintenance.

The maintenance required message isn't very smart, just mileage based as far as I can tell, and I find it non-intuitive to cancel or reset compared my previous Toyota.

My 2016 RAV4 gets oil changes every 10,000 miles, and tire rotation every 5000. Probably for tire rotation, but just look at the owners manual to be sure.

It comes on every 5K regardless. 5K is inspect fluids, hoses, belts, tire rotation. 10K is oil and filter change.

Normal for every 5000 miles. Per the manual, every 5000 miles is a basic service/tire rotation. Every 10000 miles is an oil change. Reset via the dash.

Thanks to all who replied. I agree that it's just a mileage-based routine message, so am no longer concerned that a genuine problem exists. I'm still having a problem resetting the alert, though. I've read and re-read the owners manual, which makes a distinction between Tacomas without and with a "smart key". Latter is me, but when I press and hold the Odo/trip button and press and release the engine start button (without my foot on the brake), I see an image of a Tacoma appear on the display which ends up saying Accessory On. There is no odometer showing up at all. Do I need to press and hold both buttons? What am I missing? I am feeling like I must be pretty dumb. driverdave

Can't you just go into the head unit under Maintence and change the date/mileage???? That's what I've done , and I set my own dates to remind me for Oil/Rotation/air filter, etc...

I don't get that "dealer reminder" anymore..!!
    Good luck

EDIT....OOPS.. I looked at the manual and it says "USA" only in the description of how to do this, so I guess yer truck is different...!!

What do you mean by head unit? I do keep a small spiral notebook in the glove box and keep track of date and mileage for maintenance actions.

The book says you need to be in Ignition On mode. Page 191 says to push the button without foot on brake, once will be accessory, again will be Ignition On.

    EDIT... From MY manual.....
■Resetting the reminder light (vehicles without a multi-information display)
or the message (vehicles with a multi-information display) indicating
    maintenance is required (U.S.A. only)
After the required maintenance is performed according to the maintenance
schedule, please reset the reminder light or the message.
To reset the reminder light or the message, follow the procedure described
    below:
    Turn the engine switch off.
Vehicles without a smart key system:
While pressing the “ODO/TRIP” button (P. 88), turn the engine switch to
the “ON” position. (do not start the engine because reset mode will be canceled)
Vehicles with a smart key system:
While pressing the “ODO/TRIP” button (P. 88), turn the engine switch to
the IGNITION ON mode. (do not start the engine because reset mode will
    be canceled)
Continue to press and hold the button until the odometer displays “000000”.
■Allow inspection and repairs to be performed by a Toyota dealer
●Toyota technicians are well-trained specialists and are kept up to date with
the latest service information. They are well informed about the operations
of all systems on your vehicle.
●Keep a copy of the repair order. It proves that the maintenance that has
been performed is under warranty coverage. If any problem should arise
while your vehicle is under warranty, your Toyota dealer will promptly take
    care of it.

Keep in mind that it will come on every 5k miles from when it was LAST reset. So it may or may not be in nice 5k intervals....i.e. 5k, 10k, 15k miles per the odometer

If only Toyota would include a book with these trucks that explained what all this $hit means :annoyed:

Welcome to TW OP, as mentioned Tire Rotation is the biggest 15k service.

15k means take it to the dealer, I do believe. I just got a ToyotaCare postcard and it informed me that the 5,10,15,20,25, and 30K service was free. As said above, Oil and Filter every 10K, tire rotation and inspection every 5k. My plan was to switch to Amsoil the first oil change, however now that I know it's free I'm thinking I may just let the dealer document my service until the factory powertrain warranty runs out.

Comes on every 5k miles. 15k is a tire rotation and inspection, also it's all in the manual.

They mark in the computer that I was there and they give me documentation that also says I was there. I'm hoping that will come in handy if I blow it up.
