well in that case ( unfortunately) by deductive reasoning, it could only be a malfunction within the instrument cluster itself
mine just gave me a little scare and took some coaxing to get it out, I think I had to clear the trip readings first before it finally went out,( which is why i am here now picking brains)

    Yea pretty much.

I know the procedure is slightly different between different years and vehicles, some you need to set it to Odometer, others need to be on Trip A or Trip B when doing the reset.

My 14 needs to be on Trip A when resetting but I believe earlier models had to be on Odometer.

if mine quits working I would actually consider drilling a hole in the clear cover and paint over the MAINT REQ with a brush then put a goof plug in the drill hole, hopefully it doesn't get to that stage

Button functions normally on mine, will reset trip A and B to zero, cycles through all logic normally, just won't make any attempt to rest light. The normal - - - to 000 doesn't show and light stays illuminated.

It changed in Late 2011 when they changed from the Red Face Cluster to the White Faced Cluster.

Red Faced Cluster uses the Odometer selected to reset and the White Faced Cluster uses the Trip A Selected to reset.

Finally had enough and had to do a more permanent solution…
my 2011 trd would NOT reset no matter what, had dealer inspect it, couldn’t find any issues with the truck whatsoever and still couldn’t get the light reset. Soooo I took matters into my own hands. Took about 10 minutes start to finish, couldn’t believe how easy it was!
I removed the gauge cluster (literally pull on the trim and it’s all clips pulls straight off torwards driver seat, then 4 bolts for cluster) disconnect negative terminal on battery, then unplug the two wire harnesses to the cluster which are conveniently located right on top with little tabs on the backside, then when cluster is off, the clear cover is just tab clips and pops right off, then was able to lift the corner of the cluster and sneak a piece of electrical tape over the maint reqd light (not touching a light itself, just over the plastic tunnel bezel for the light) and it worked so perfectly. I use my trip A for my oil change mileage so it doesn’t effect my use whatsoever. Jerry rig genius is how i’m feeling. Here’s a few pics i snapped along the process LOL:

Did you ever fix the issue? I am having the same issue on my 2011 taco!! I feel your pain, everyone was just assuming I was doing the procedure wrong on my post. Did you just end up taking the bulb out?

It never reset! I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me, nor could my local Toyota dealer. It’s not a bulb style like some gauges, instead it’s a tiny led on a motherboard so i did double layer electrical tape over the tiny led square and haven’t thought about it again LOL

I haven't looked into it because I don't have the problem, but looked at what my old bidirectional scan tool, an Autel DS808, has for settings, and there is an operation for "Manual Oil Reset." Has anyone tried doing it through a scan tool (I haven't gone through the whole thread cuz I'm just suggesting).

Edit in case anyone is wondering - this is the list specifically for a 2013 Tacoma with either 4 or 6 cylinder engine.

A buddy from work had a much better scan tool that has that option, I will try it next week and I’ll try to remember to report back. My Amazon special obd2 reader doesn’t have that option

It didn’t seem to give me the option. I might try to get a Snap-On scanner from that might work better. But not seeming very promising for a scanner.
