In the past, when I turned on my truck. The maintenance required light would stay lit for 2-3 seconds after the truck was turned on, along with the airbag light then go away. I believe this is normal?

Recently, the maintenance required light blinks a few times, and longer than it was staying lit before. The blinking maintenance required light goes away, but it blinks several times when I turn on the truck.

3 weeks ago I had the valve cover gasket replaced by the dealer. A few days afterwards I had an oil change done on the truck. Truck has been run less than 1k miles since the last oil change. I can get exact miles later. Any idea why the maintenance required light is blinking?

Long ago I've had this maintenance required light turn on and stay on but this is the first time it's blinking right after turning the truck on. Am I over reacting? I guess I'm just curious since I had the truck serviced so recently.

Anyone experience something similar? If it had been 4-5k miles since the last oil change on the truck this wouldn't worry me and I'd just take it in but like I said, I haven't even reached 1k since the last oil change.

This is a 2008 Tacoma btw.

    Thanks

Normal. Your maint required light was not reset by the person performing your oil x likely because you were before your interval was due. The light blinks upon startup to remind you that the 5k interval is coming up, at which point will stay lit. You can reset the light yourself using the trip meter button , there are instructions elsewhere on TW

Justturned off the "Maint Required" light

    * Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position, but do not start the engine
    * Press the odometer button until you see “TRIP A” on the little display
    * Next, turn the ignition “off”
    * Press and hold the Trip Odometer Reset button, and turn the ignition switch to the “On” position
    * Continue to hold down the Trip Odometer Reset button until “000000” MILES appears on the display and the maintenance light turns off.

I've recently done about 1k in services and maintenance so that I can sell my truck and get another Tacoma and small shit like this just makes me go crazy thinking I might have to dump another 2-300 dollars.

    Many Thanks

Because it's within 500 miles of it's 5000 mile 'on steady' cycle.

    It's just a mileage 'clock'.

Whoever changed your oil last didn't reset it. Probably forgot, because it wasn't on yet.

Basic stuff like this is in the owners manual.

Maintinence light is an oil change reminder light. It blinks to let you know the 5,000 is approaching and stay lit after 5,000 miles.

Your owners manual should tell you this.

+1 to all of this. The "Engine Oil Replacement Reminder Light" is covered on pg 159 of your Owner's Manual, available for download from the Toyota Owner's site.

Thanks for starting this thread this morning. Was literally looking for the same answer as mine started flashing when I left for work.

The (renamed) "Maintenance required reminder light" is explained on pg 481 of your Owner's Manual, also available for download from the Toyota Owner's site. Note that the reset procedure is slightly different between early and later 2nd Gen trucks.

There is a smartphone app that works pretty well. It's free, you can create an account, and enter the VIN# and it will pull all the maintenance/service records done at a Toyota dealer. I've started making it a practice to add all the stuff I do too (manually) so that if anyone checks it down the line, it's there. Every time I look at buying a used Toyota, I open the app and add the VIN#, and I can see dealer service records. Pretty handy... plus you get the searchable owners manual on your phone!

2005 Tacoma reset procedure: (g) Engine Oil Replacement Reminder Light (for vehicles sold in U.S.A.) This light acts as a reminder to replace the engine oil. This light will come on when the ignition key is turned to “ON” and will go off after about a few seconds. When you drive for about 7200 km (4500 miles) after the engine oil replacement, this light illuminates for about 3 seconds and then flashes for about 12 seconds with the ignition key turned to the “ON” position. If you continue driving without replacing the engine oil, and if the distance driven exceeds 8000 km (5000 miles), the light will come on after the ignition key is turned to “ON” position. The light will remain on thereafter. If the light is flashing, we recommend that you replace the engine oil at an early opportunity depending on the driving and road conditions. If the light comes on, replace it as soon as possible. The system must be reset after the engine oil replacement. Reset the system by the following procedure: 1. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position with the odometer reading shown. (For details, see “Odometer and two trip meters” on page 145 in this Section.) 2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position while holding down the trip meter reset knob. Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds. The odometer indicates “000000” and the light goes off. If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.

That ship has sailed I believe. I was not aware of the recall and the deadline has passed. Luckly my truck is from CA, no snow, no rust.

Thanks for your input, my 08 Tacoma reset the way you described.
