Was browsing through the maintenance booklet and noticed it says to change the coolant AND intercooler coolant. Am I missing something here? I was under the impression the Tacoma uses an air to air intercooler and the tundra has a coolant cooled air charge. Just figured I’d post it and get a discussion about it.

Head out to the garage and see what’s on the truck.

Could be a holder over from another Toyota engine. My understanding is that the 2024 Tacoma turbo is cooled by engine coolant and also cooled and lubricated by engine oil.

im 99% sure its just air to air. open your hood follow the charge pipes to the grill. now follow the only coolant pipes that go to the radiator.

Remember Care Care nut saying on his review video on the Gen4 that it has an air/air intercooler and the turbo is both oil and coolant cooled. The only other coolant is if you have a hybrid as they usually have a small coolant system near the pax side for the inverter.

It doesn't strongly suggest it. It outright says it: "A compact liquid intercooler is used to cool the charge air." There's even a diagram of the coolant flow for the intercooler and turbocharger and a 3D model of the intercooler itself with coolant pipes coming out of it. I managed to gloss over it before, as I thought it was a run of the mill air-to-air intercooler, but it looks like there is an entirely separate coolant circuit for the intercooler and turbo with its own electric coolant pump, reservoir, and radiator.

open your hood then and show us the extra coolant circuit.

@MJB4450 It is a good video, but why would you post a Microsoft Bing wrapper of his Youtube video??? Here's the link to the real video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX6gUJrlyW4&t=1s

However, I didn't see anything definitive on the intercooler in the video. Maybe I overlooked it.

He mentions that the intercooler is an air to air and not as efficient as an air to coolant but not a big issue but simpler and how the wastegate is vacuum not electrical which is much better reliability wise.
As far as the Bing thing, Maybe you could educate me on why that's a problem or a fopah. I'm not super computer savvy so that's the only way I knew how to find and post the video. I'm always willing to learn a better way.

That site is not correct. They took the run of the mill T24A-FTS technical document and applied it to the Tacoma. Most T24As use air to water. The Tacoma does not, it is air to air.

Air-to-air will always get my vote. Thanks for finding that @PDKTaco.

Air to Air is simpler.. SXTH is working on a bigger more efficient one. Should be an easy install but pricey I’m sure?
