I walked out to my truck this morning and hopped in to run some errands. As soon as I started it, there was a CEL and the TRAC OFF light on. There is a Toyota dealership a mile down the road, so I was going to take it there to have them check it out. It was then that it became obvious there was a serious problem. The truck started in first just fine (automatic) then when the truck should have shifted into second, it acted like it went into neutral and reved up to 5000 RPM then as soon as I though to myself, that's weird, it dropped very hard into second gear and lunged forward. It would then not shift out of second and would only go about 30 mph. I drove as carefully as I could the mile down to the dealership. I had never been to this particular dealership before, but overall I was very impressed with them. I did take a while to convince them that this was more than the normal problems with this transmission. But once they agreed to take it for a test drive, the guy came back and agreed something was very wrong. I left the truck there for them to take a look at, it was on Saturday, so it took 2 hours to get to it. Once they called me with an update, they assured me that it would all be under warranty, but they will have to take out the transmission and open it up to see what all needs to be done. They believe it is at least a transmission shift solenoid, but they will know more today(Monday) once they get to look at it more. I've had the truck for 14 months without any problems, so obviously, I'm not very happy about this happening at only 37,000 miles. I will keep this thread updated, as I hear more. I know all the normal issues with this transmission, but I had not heard of anything like this before.

On a side note, after a lengthy discussion with the service guy, I did get a loaner car while the work is being done. Long story short, I will not be trading my Taco in for a base model Camry. Tip, if your truck is in for warranty work, and they wont give you a loaner, mention the "Toyota Transportation Assistance Policy" he had offered to call me an Uber but I stressed that if the truck was out of commission, I need a way to get to work. After mentioning the policy, I was put on a brief hold, and then he very politely told me they would have a loaner ready in 30 minutes. This only holds true for warranty work, but good to know none the less!

"Toyota Transportation Assistance Policy" Good thing you mentioned this. I wonder how many people end up getting a rental on their own dime because they either don't know, or don't want to put forth the effort to check into it. I hope it all works out for you.

These things happen, you have warranty for a reason. They will fix whatever needs to be fixed at no cost to you and you will get your truck back. No need to make a big deal about it.
With literally tens of thousands of components on modern vehicles, failures are bound to happen and sometimes they are major drive-train components. Don't sweat it, the dealerships tend to replace components instead of repair so more than likely you will get a new valve body or transmission all together.

Glad they are fixing it. Are they doing it out of goodwill since you are a 1,000 miles out of warranty?

I usually dont buy extended warranties but I did for this truck as you mention with the amount of components in modern vehicles.

There was some confusion on this. They are calling Toyota to clear up. My window sticker says 5/50,000 but they thought it was 6/60,000. It is covered either way, but will be good to get sorted.

3yr 36000 is bumper to bumper which covers everything including electronics, etc.. 5yr 60000 is the Powertrain warranty.

If it is a solenoid..... sometimes they prematurely fail.

I think it’s either a typo or you read it wrong, every Toyota is the same.

Thanks for the policy info. I would’ve never thought of that. I figured it was just a mandatory thing to get a loaner since you know, you’re paying a company thousands of dollars for their product that transports you places and will leave you stranded when it takes a dump on you. Standing by for updates!

Update Monday afternoon, 2 days after I originally dropped off truck. They got a chance to look at it more in depth. There are two problems. The first being a bad wire to the transmission (not a whole lot of info on what wire or anything like that yet) Second problem is the ECM- I need a new one. They were in the process of ordering the parts when I called, so no estimated time line yet. They will give me call again tomorrow with more detailed information, so I will update you when I hear.
