Being a new member, not sure this is an effective place to share this. Here goes anyway!

    Tachoma spare tire lowering tool

I could not get the cheep spare lowering tool supplied with my Tachoma to work. It came apart and the end section fell into the still full up spare wheel. I made a robust tool that easily gets the job done.

This photo shows the place where the lowering tool needs to fit. It is smooth and round with a channel across it.

A 1 and 1/8 inch socket is just the right size to fit around the lowering mechanism. I cut a piece of 3/4 inch by 1/8 inch bar stock just the right length for it to insert across the socket into a flute on each side. It was cut at a slight angle so that it needed to be hammered in and would not fall out.

This fits the lowering mechanism perfectly.

I used the1/2 drive socket fitted with a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor and then, it turns out, that a 24 inch 3/8 extension is the perfect length to connect with my 3/8 inch breaker bar. This rig just clears the bumper when inserted. The socket is too big to fit under the tailgate,so insert the extension and reach under the bumper to attach socket.

If your Tachoma is like mine there is a groove in the top of the bumper on which the lowering tool rests. Hold a little downward pressure on the extension to keep it in the groove and it will run smoothly.

    Hope this helps. KMP

I use the hook that comes in the jack kit, then put an extension piece on if it's not quite long enough. Put the end in my Milwaukee drill and hit the reverse button. Spare drops in less than 5 seconds.

It may help to lower it once a year while you are at it turn the tire over so the valve points down.
