Hello everyone I am currently trying to decide on if I want a Tacoma or a 4Runner. I want it for overlanding or carrying small loads on a trailer. I also fish a lot and plan on towing a boat.

Been a long time since I had to make that decision, but back in 2011 you seemed to get more for your money with the Tacoma, and a higher towing capacity. Obviously you give up some interior cargo space with the Tacoma, but the bed can be used similarly, especially if you get a canopy/tonneau.

I would take some time to check out prices on lots to see what you get for your money, options/technology wise. Not just MSRP, but what they're selling for on the lot.

Towing what you mention seems fine for either, but if you are going to be towing regularly, or possibly closer to the max capacity, I'd want the longer wheelbase of the Tacoma over the 4runner.

Define what overlanding means to you. I mean it's bantied around a lot, but not always used as folks think.

Then think how you'd actually use the vehicle. Consider passengers, duration of your time in the field, etc. etc.

    That might help you decide.

Any Tacoma with 4wd will do what 99% of people consider "overlanding". Any of them will probably need heavier rear springs/air bags/etc if you start loading them down with cargo as we all do. My locker was used so little the actuator finally gave out, and it hasn't been an issue for me.

I went back and forth with a similar situation. I had an SUV at the time and I finally decided I wanted a truck bed more than extra inside space. It’s a lot easier to spray out a truck bed then it was to clean all the dust, dirt, and mud I was getting inside my current SUV. So I went with the Tacoma over a 4Runner.

To each their own. You will ultimately make that decision. When you do, I wish you many years of fun!
