I currently drive a 2002 SR5 Prerunner with ~98k on it, I'm debating buying a new Toyota (2021) but I feel like my current truck could do another 100k easily even at 20 years old.

I've been shopping and debating this for about 2 months and I've worked my way into a state of indecision.
Looking for some wisdom, stay old in these times or go new? Wait for the 2022's?
Are the 2021 Tacomas getting good reviews?
4WD vs 2WD, my current truck is 2 wheel drive, never needed the 4WD but I wouldn't mind having 4WD, any problems there besides fuel efficiency?

Analysis paralysis haha. If youre happy with the current truck and keep up on maintenance Id say run it. That being said if your current truck is in good shape the used market is very good right now for selling.

One thing you might keep in mind is all the new safety features being mandated now a days. Those may or may not bother you, but it would certainly be a big leap from your 2002 in that regard.

I love my 2017. As for 4x4, the only thing is the fuel efficiency penalty and to remember not to use it on dry pavement with 4x4 engaged. But my 2017 4x4 still gets around 21-23 MPG at 70 MPH.

98k is not a lot, especially for a 2002. Any particular reason you'd want to sell? I don't believe there are any anticipated changes for 2022 that aren't already available on the 2021 models so there wouldn't really be a point in waiting for that. Personally, I think the 2017 is the perfect year since it doesn't have TSS and still has the driver's side cubby in the bed.

I have the money, and the new toyotas are nice looking, other than that no reason to buy.

Also if inflation decides to take off 2022 might no be affordable for em any longer.

I'm a big fan of buying used and keeping my money in my own pocket. Paying interest is making someone else wealthy so I buy for cash and pocket the interest I avoid. If all you are doing is getting a wild hair... then perhaps it is an impulse buy you may regret.

There would be a whole lot less hesitation on my part if the toyota came with a .50 on it like yours.

This says to me, “Don’t buy a new one.”
I don’t see a why you should, if it’s not NEEDED.

I’d save my money, then buy a new one when you need it.
Remember, even the new one will eventually become old and worn.
Buying new now, will only lead to needing another new one sooner.

I should buy a larger truck. I tow fairly frequently.
And the extra power of a full size would help.
But my Tacoma gets it done, so I’m keeping it for now.

I’ve been looking at buy a tractor for awhile.
I’m holding off to save extra money, just in case the Tacoma doesn’t like the Tractor.
(It will be a Sub-Compact Tractor, no more than 3,000 lbs with implements)

I would definitely keep the 1st Gen. I had 2 different 3rd gens and weren’t really that happy with either. I ended up getting rid of them and buying a 2010. I’m a lot happier with the 2nd Gen. Save your hard earned money and enjoy what you’ve got. 1st gens are awesome!

I'm with you regarding paying cash. Something to watch for, tho, is what I found last year--used vehicles selling for what a new one cost.

The OP made the right decision IMO.

Good decision to keep. Besides, there’s a bubble in new truck prices right now that will be gone in a year or so. 98K on an 02 is great!
