In the land of Tacomas (Hawaii), my guess is most of the Tacomas here are 2WD and reside on Oahu. Most people here don't off-road and use it to their practicality.

Back to the topic, if you bought the Tacoma at a good deal, sell it for more and put it towards a 4WD.

Tons of useless opinions in this thread from people who have no experience converting a tacoma to 4wd. Yes OP, it can be done fairly easy and in most cases (mine included) it’s definitely cheaper than trading in, especially now. Shameless plug but I made a good thread to give you an idea of how technical it will be, see here. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/05-15-2wd-to-4wd-conversion-guide-for-dummies.716703/

Also with you being a 2wd 3rd gen, it’ll be a bit different but looks like this guy did a successful FJ swap, tho he started out with 4wd. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fj-t-case-into-a-3rd-gen.582029/

It’s that way in everyone of these types of threads. I’m personally glad I didn’t listen to all the nay sayers 6 years ago when I did my conversion.

I do my own oil changes but every time I regret it. Sometimes I’d rather do a 4WD conversion than change my oil. There’s always some new pain in the ass problem each time I do an oil change.

Useless opinions? His original question indicates he doesn't have the knowledge or skills to do it himself or he wouldn't have asked it.

I’m pretty sure most people that have successfully converted their truck to 4WD have asked the same questions when they first considered it. I know I did. Once I found out it was possible, I spend about a year researching it because there was so little info on converting 2nd gens at the time (and no info on converting 4-cyl 2nd gens).

And how much did it cost you and how long in total was your truck undrivable while converting it and cleaning up loose ends?

Cost me just about $2k. Bought a couple items that didn’t work out. So I could have done it cheaper if I had been smarter but I guess that’s just part of it.

My truck was only out of service for about 4 days while I swapped in the rear drivetrain. After that I drove it for a couple weeks before spending a long Saturday and Sunday swapping in the front drive components. I did it without any help. With a buddy it would have been much faster.

Took me about 3 weeks but I had to work on it weekends 40min from my place at the time because I lived in an apartment. I could probably have gotten it done in simmilar time now that I have my own garage to work with

Financially - not a good decision to convert. My opinion.

Wow, that's pretty good. I don't have the confidence in myself that I could do something like that that quick without messing something up the first time around. Hats off to you.

Another question... What's the reason why you think you need 4x4. Do you live in the snow, are you trying to make it overlander? If You just want to go camping off of dirt roads, You'll be just fine

I wasn’t so sure I could do it either. But it’s surprisingly straight forward. Almost all of it is bolt on replacements.

Ton of info on TW for this. Ive spend a few months in the shadows reading different posts following threads. Thanks to a good friend and a few posts from @Brian422 and @pdaddy Ive started collecting parts for my swap!
Worth it to me, Ive put in all the other mods into a 2x4 ACLB including gears and air locker... Might as well top it off with a 4x4 swap. Beats a car payment ever month

Man glad i could help out! Yes my truck was paid off as well and already had a ton of mods on it which ultimately the reason i chose to do the conversion. Looks almost factory. Dash lights and everything work when you put it into 4wd. If you plan on keeping your truck for a long time then its def something to consider. Ill probably never get rid of this truck and just motor swap it when engine blows considering everything outside of body and motor on my truck is basically new.
