Making the Hood Scoop work?

    When you see the intake on the completely factory M, you will see that aero dynamics has a lot less to do with it than you think. Rather, the idea of what aero dynamics can look like and what we perceive should/shouldn't work.

    I am not saying converting it to function is easy, inexpensive, or even better than stock. I am saying one with enough knowledge, time, and funds can do it.

    Anyone saying otherwise is wrong.

    Waste of money and pointless is another subject. Yes, it will work and that was my point.


    People are so quick to bring in aerodynamics, location, size of scoop, etc and say it won't work, but they have no idea what they are talking about. Toyota found a better alternative, it could have been because they didn't want to engineer a separate intake for the Sport model, or it cost too much, or wasn't as reliable in certain driving conditions, etc. My guess it was a compromise of all those things and more, but one here including me knows.

    Sizeof opening, height of scoop, location on hood, aerodynamics and others have less to do with ability to function than many realize. Here is my example and pics below. My BMW makes over 100 hp per liter, naturally aspirated, and completely stock. The powertrain has won numerous international awards, yet the intake is tiny and located towards the middle of the hood with no scoop at all. When I take it up to around 9k rpms, it certainly isn't choking either. The engine is a larger 4.0 V8 as well, it makes over 400hp stock.

    I inlcuded the Taco key and the Sport hood as well, give you an idea of scale. The BMW hood's passenger side opening is blocked off, only the drivers side is functional.

    It functions just fine from the factory for me as looks damn good, and the point of it off the showroom floor.

    I am installing a SC, seems alot less complicated anyway. I will take the easy way out.

    I am saying two things, and appologies as I am not the best with words, but I will try to summarize .

    First, I am saying the scoop is totally functional. Just like the chrome on an OR pack, it is a design feature. Many don't like the chrome, many don't like the scoop, regardless they are both used by Toyota as an aesthetic feature. In my opinion, the scoop looks good, therefore it is functional to me.

    Second thing I am saying (and using my M3 as an example) is the aerodynamics, low-pressure theory, design and shape of the scoop, etc arguments have absolutley nothing to do with how effective it could be if one were so inclined to make it into an intake. An experienced engineer could face the scoop towards the cabin and it could work and possibly make a bit more hp, it won't happen as it would look rediculous. "Ram air" is bs, and the tiny hole in the hood of the M prove it. That is a serious production machine with a lot of power and technology built-in. The scoop in the Taco is more than sufficient to utilize if one wanted to spend the time, money and possibly aggrevation to make it work.

    Now, some argue it is pointless or not worth it, but that is their opinion. In many respects I agree, but to say it won't work is a bit ignorant.
